Accounting Associate

  • Responsibilities:
    1. Research and monitor federal and state tax laws and regulations to insure the University's compliance with all aspects of payroll, including the areas of Graduate Educational Assistance Plan, tax risks of international students' scholars and researchers, nonresident alien tax treaties, nonresident alien reporting, collective bargaining agreements, and tax implications for honoraria. Assist with management of any program requiring additional employee taxation (housing, meal, vehicles, etc.). Prepare and submit the applicable payroll tax returns and forms.
    2. Ensure business services operations are efficient and accurate. Lead and assist in the coordination and development of new processes and procedures. Assist with implementation upgrades and updates to the Billing and Receivables (BR) and Financial Reporting System (FRS).
    3. Develops a thorough understanding of the capabilities and shortcomings of existing automated payroll and accounting systems and applications. Serves as the primary liaison with programmers to facilitate changes/upgrades to the payroll and accounting system. Identifies system problems and takes the necessary corrective action. Identifies system changes for compliance with regulatory agencies. Trains staff members on system changes/upgrades. Identifies risk areas and acts to mitigate risk. Identifies and implements opportunities for ongoing business process improvement to improve accuracy and efficiency of operations to include improving internal control.
    4. Prepare and gather data for inclusion in special reports for management. Prepare and transmit electronic funds transfer information for federal and state tax deposits. Prepare all payroll work papers for submission to the external auditors for the financial audit and compliance examination and meet with auditors regarding the internal controls of the payroll process.
    5. Train staff members on the use of the Billing and Receivables and Financial Reporting System.
    6. Inspect all payroll and business service systems output in order to detect errors and determine out-of-balance conditions. Submit and troubleshoot programs and communicate with production control to process each step of a business process.
    7. Responsible for the Compensated Absences Report for fiscal year-end that is reported on the financial statements.
  • Required Qualifications:
    CREDENTIALS TO BE VERIFIED
    1. Bachelor's degree with a major in Accountancy or a related field AND two (2) years of professional level accounting experience.

    OR
    1. Possession of current registration as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Management Accountant, or a valid license to practice Public Accounting (LPA).

    OR
    1. Master's degree in Accountancy or a related field.
