Job Description:

POSITION SUMMARY
The Assistant Director of Counseling provides leadership for counseling services and supports the clinical supervision and assessment needs of the team. This position ensures quality delivery of counseling services to a diverse student population, fosters a team environment, and manages staff, interns, and campus-wide wellness programming in a high-paced environment. Contributes to student success and retention efforts within a “student-first” framework. The Assistant Director develops, maintains, explains, interprets, and enforces policy and procedure, as well as provides direct services to those utilizing counseling services while partnering closely with colleagues in the Department of Student Wellbeing and across the college. The person in this role is able to develop and grow community partnerships that can have a positive impact on students and will be dedicated to creating an inclusive and equitable experience for students working through mental health difficulties that impact other aspects of their lives including academic success.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

Counseling Programs Development and Management
Manages and operates counseling services including campus-wide programming. Providing leadership and responsibility of Counseling day-to-day operations, including documentation of incidents, communication to students, faculty, and staff, and case management; including proactive outreach and holistic support. Ensures that the Counseling staff is informed and educated on ethical, legal, and policy issues related to providing mental health services. Adheres to rules and regulations set by the State of Ohio Counselor and the Social Worker and Marriage and Family Therapist Board, and ensures the Counseling Services staff adheres to the same ethical standards of practice.

Provides clinical supervision to therapists and interns in order to ensure best practices, also providing consultation to counselors within the department on individual cases as needed. Supports Counseling Services staff in grant-related programming, both in practice and development. Serves on the college’s Behavioral Intervention Team and Threat Assessment Team. Works with campus departments for the purposes of crisis stabilization. Chairs the Biennial Review Committee, a multi-departmental team created to update and revise policies, procedures, and programming information needed to maintain Columbus State as a drug and alcohol-free environment for the continuation of federal funding.

Develops and provides training and presentations to students, staff, and faculty in regards to mental health concerns, education, and issues as well as empowering and facilitating Counseling Services staff to implement training in a similar fashion. Ensures accuracy of printed materials. Creates and edits forms, brochures, and information packets for marketing of services. Reviews and provides updates for the Website and engages the area in social media outreach.

Operational Leadership
Supervises assigned areas of responsibility and staff by recruiting and hiring, assigning and delegating tasks, providing direction, resolving work problems, communicating job expectations, training employees, and developing professional growth opportunities. Provides leadership and direction to the Counseling Services staff including interns. Coordinates Service delivery with Counseling Services partners on the Delaware campus, including implementation of shared programming. Coordinates campus communications of counseling services including monthly campus wellbeing topics.

Conducts annual employee evaluations, provides ongoing feedback and coaching, and effectively recommends pay increases, promotions, and other personnel actions. Approves leaves and authorizes overtime as appropriate. Administers disciplinary actions upon approval and in collaboration with Human Resources. Interprets, explains, carries out, and enforces the College's policies. Facilitates internship relationships and coordinates internship initiatives with counselor education programs in the region.

Counseling and Crisis Management
Provide direct counseling support to students individually or in groups. Work in partnership with the Campus Police Department to handle crisis situations as they arise. Provide counseling-based advice to faculty, staff, and administrators related to student behavior. Serve as a member of the college’s Behavioral Intervention Team and other student success/wellness groups.

Business Process Management
Actively participates in the delivery of a College-wide strategy that supports the strategic goals of the College. Stays up-to-date on current accreditation requirements and state and federal compliance issues related to counseling; serving as a resource to students, staff, and faculty.

Provides consultative services to academic departments, non-academic departments, and external community partners on counseling services, tools, and strategies to support their student success. Evaluates and assess the effectiveness of services.

Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
Develops and maintains strategic partnerships with diverse groups and communities. Partners strategically with Talent Acquisition to ensure the best Diversity, Equity & Inclusion practices are utilized in hiring that results in the hiring and retention of a diverse faculty and staff. Helps to ensure the College meets its responsibilities in identifying problem areas and systemic concerns while reporting complaints alleging discrimination.

Takes responsibility for creating a welcoming, inclusive, and productive work environment where employees feel valued and able to contribute to their full potential, regardless of their differences. Assists with conducting workforce analytics to identify potential inhibitors of a workplace environment that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive.

Administration and Fiscal Management
Assists with monitoring and ensuring compliance with the unit’s budget process. Maintains information and assessment tools deemed necessary by the College. Assists in the researching and drafting of grants to help fund department initiatives. Collaborates with IT and other departments, as necessary, to assure the proper maintenance, viability, and functionality of technologies needed to administer, report, and monitor counseling services. Collects data and assists in preparing reports for senior leadership when needed. Keeps accurate records. Completes and maintains required documentation including counseling and programming statistics, performance, and project status reports.

OTHER DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Serves on College committees, councils, and advisory boards as assigned. Manages multiple assignments of varying complexity while meeting federal as well as internal regulations and procedures, with the ability to adapt to changing needs of the College and business partners.

Hours will include working outside of the normal workweek including some evenings and weekends as needed to meet workload demands and college extended scheduling

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Master's Degree in Counseling, Social Work, or a related field from an accredited college or university with a minimum of three (3) years of related counseling experience. State of Ohio Counselor Licensure (LPCC-S, LMFT-S, LICSW-S) (Note: Clinical Supervision License required)

State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable ability to gain access to work site(s).
