Job Description Summary

This Research Scientist position is responsible for conducting research under the guidance of Dr. Patrick Zhang, FIPR’s research director in charge of beneficiation and mining. Your research will focus on a DOE funded project on recovery of rare earths from phosphate mining and processing streams, involving mineral processing and metallurgical engineering techniques.

Job Description

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Writing grant applications for federal and industrial funding
  • Training student interns on laboratory research techniques
  • Conducting research on recovery of uranium and rare earths from phosphate, involving mineral processing and metallurgical engineering techniques
  • Conducting chemical and mineralogical analysis of solid and liquid samples
  • Conducting research on phosphate beneficiation
  • Conducting research on utilization of phosphogypsum, especially in agriculture
  • Preparing research reports and technical papers for publishing
  • Operating analytical instruments.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of Rare earths recovery from phosphate flotation tails, phosphogypsum, phosphate rock, phosphate clay, and phosphoric acid sludge; Surface chemistry, thermodynamics and chemistry; principles of minerals processing; unit operations in chemical and metallurgical engineering, extractive metallurgy, and solid-liquid separation.
  • Ability to conduct research in beneficiation methods, particularly for phosphate beneficiation, such as flotation, gravity separation, hydro cyclone separation, leaching, and pyro-metallurgical techniques; mineralogical analysis tools; computer skills; wet chemistry and analysis methods; pre-feasibility analysis.
  • Ability to design and carry out experiments with minimal supervision; to prepare quality technical reports and papers; to develop processing flowsheets for recovering rare earths from unconventional feedstocks, as well as for recovering mineral resources and metals from both solids and liquid; and to apply interdisciplinary approaches to mineral processing and extraction metallurgy.
  • Ability to prepare PPTs and deliver technical presentations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • MS degree in the fields of minerals processing or metallurgical engineering
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Ph.D. in soil science or civil engineering
REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND/OR OTHER SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS OF LAW:
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • This position requires a criminal background check, which may include a Level II screening as required by Florida Statute §435.04.
  • This position is subject to federal and state privacy regulations.
NORMAL WORK SCHEDULE: This position is Full-Time, salaried position. The normal work schedule is Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., however, occasional overtime (weekends and evenings) may be required.

TARGET HIRING SALARY: $68,000 – $76,000, commensurate with experience.
