Essential Functions (Job Duties)
Wayne State University (WSU) seeks a knowledgeable, innovative, service­ oriented individual for the position of Audiovisual Archivist (Archivist I) at the Walter P. Reuther Library, Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs. The Audiovisual Archivist takes a lead role in providing reference services and custodial care for the Library's analog and digital audiovisual collections, a multi-format assemblage of over two million items. This 60% fractional time position reports to the Director of the Walter P. Reuther Library, Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs. This appointment and future renewals are contingent upon a successful performance and ongoing funding.

The Walter P. Reuther Library, Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs is the largest labor archives in North America and is home to the collections of numerous unions and labor-related organizations. Its collection strengths extend to the political and community life of urban and metropolitan Detroit, the Civil Rights Movement in Michigan and nationally, and women's struggles in the workplace. The Reuther Library is home to the Wayne State University Archives, established by the Board of Governors in 1958 in recognition of the importance and permanent value of the University's official files, records, and documents.

Essential Job Functions:
Provide regular reference services for the audiovisual collections (primarily) and the general collections of the Walter P. Reuther Library, Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs, including undertaking research for onsite and remote patrons, rendering legal release forms and invoices, and delivering materials in a timely fashion;

Provide custodial care to the audiovisual collections, including preservation, format migration, environmental monitoring, and providing instruction on the correct handling of the materials to staff and patrons;

Arrange, describe, and generate discovery content for the audiovisual collections, including creating descriptive metadata, inventories, shelf lists, and editing and maintaining relevant discovery tools;

Generate digital content for various Reuther web galleries and other venues;

Manage accounts with vendors, including digitization contracts, materials preparation, shipping logistics, and inventory tracking;

Manage large-scale projects including traditional processing, preservation planning, digital file processing, and batch file manipulation;

Participate actively in the shared decision-making for library planning, resource management, and program and policy development;

Represent the library through active participation in professional archival organizations and university committees; and

Perform other duties as assigned by the director.

Unique Duties

Qualifications
Master's degree from an accredited institution in library/information science, archival administration, or a related field;

One or more year of experience working with audiovisual collections;

Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain databases and other related software to support image collections, content management systems, and asset distribution;

Fundamental understanding of DACS, EAD, and other relevant description standards;

Experience reformatting audiovisual media types, including photographs, photonegatives, reel-to-reel recordings, video and audio cassette tapes, vinyl recordings, and motion picture film;

Knowledge and working experience of copyright, donor restriction, and permissions issues related to processing and patron services;

Outstanding written and oral communication and interpersonal skills, superior organizational ability, initiative, and an entrepreneurial approach;

Demonstrated ability to work in a team-based setting where consultation, flexibility, collaboration, and cooperation are essential;

Demonstrated commitment to advancing professional knowledge through formal training, continuing education, or professional certification;

Ability to meet expectations for promotion as part of the Reuther Library academic staff

Meet the physical demands of the position, e.g., lift heavy storage boxes, climb stair ladders, work in a sedentary position for long durations.

Preferred Qualifications
Fluency in Adobe Creative Suite products, MS Office products, and FileMaker Pro;

Experience using audio editing software; and

Demonstrated experience with file management tasks, such as navigating within directory trees, moving files, renaming files.
