Visiting Assistant Professor of Gender Studies & Anthropology
Whitman College

Located in Walla Walla, Washington, Whitman's beautiful tree-lined campus is home to an intellectually diverse, dynamic, and supportive community of some 500 staff and faculty serving roughly 1,500 students from the local region and across the globe. With exceptional students, and accomplished faculty and staff, Whitman College continues to build on its national reputation for academic excellence as one of the top liberal arts colleges in the country.

The Gender Studies Program and Anthropology Department at Whitman College are seeking candidates for a one-year position in Gender Studies and Anthropology, with broad expertise in disability studies, indigenous epistemologies, and/or transnational feminisms. We also seek scholars whose work brings an ethnographic focus to the nexus of gender and intersectional identities, especially as manifest in social movements, engagements with nation-states, and/or the study of emergent political forms. The position will be hired at the rank of visiting assistant professor (or visiting instructor if ABD), beginning August 2022. Applicants must have a Ph.D. or ABD status in Anthropology, Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, or an affiliated field.

The successful candidate will offer five courses during the academic year, including Introduction to Gender Studies, Problems with Privilege (a course focused on intersectional epistemologies), as well as three additional elective courses, both lower and upper level, based on their expertise.

Whitman College is committed to cultivating a diverse learning community. Applicants should explain how their classroom will serve to create and sustain an inclusive learning environment. This statement can be included in the cover letter or the teaching statement. In their cover letter, candidates should address their interest in working at a liberal arts college with undergraduates, majors as well as non-majors, at all levels of instruction.

To apply, go to https://whitman.bamboohr.com/jobs/view.php?id=163. The online application will prompt you to upload all of the required materials: a letter of application; curriculum vitae; statement of teaching philosophy; evidence of demonstrated or potential excellence in undergraduate instruction; and contact information for three references.

Review of applications will begin on April 1, 2022 and continue until the position is filled.

Whitman College is cultivating a community built on inclusion and belonging. We recognize the value of those who can offer historically underrepresented perspectives and encourage applications from those whose background, knowledge, and insights from lived experience can add to the college's working and learning environment. Whitman College is an EEO employer.

No applicant shall be discriminated against on the basis of race, color, sex, gender, religion, age, marital status, national origin, disability, veteran's status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other basis prohibited by applicable federal, state, or local law.
