Job Summary

The University of Colorado Boulder Visual Identity Manager is considered the expert guide on implementing the CU Boulder visual identity in visual storytelling, merchandising and all places where we holistically represent the sum of the CU Boulder brand. They are the final check for upholding and promoting the brand image for the institution.
Under the direction of the Director of Brand and Constituent Strategy and in partnership with the Brand Strategist, the Visual Identity Manager works with all elements of Strategic Relations and Communications and within the context of the Constituent Experience and Technologies team to exercise care and guidance over the totality of CU Boulder visual brand expression. They help guide the development and evolution of the brand personality, focusing on its visual identity, and how that identity is expressed across all dimensions of constituent experience.

Strategic Relations and Communications facilitate an integrated approach to campus-wide marketing and communications to encourage greater CU Boulder engagement, affinity, and support.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Visual Identity Management:
Working in collaboration across Strategic Relations and Communications, the Visual Identity Manager empowers execution and alignment on the visual identity of the CU Boulder brand as a shared responsibility. They negotiate and manage exceptions and extensions to the visual identity (marks, co-branding). They are the final approval point of visual identity, working within a structure of delegated brand management for day-to-day operations.
  • Guides teams in translation of the visual identity, reviews work product for visual identity compliance.
  • Provides visual identity training and consultation for campus design partners.
  • Works collaboratively with delegated brand management.
  • Reviews/approves any highly visible, high-profile design projects.
  • Reviews/approves logo requests, including requests for new lockups.
  • Reviews/approves merchandising requests after design process.
  • Manages the visual identity exception, extension process.
  • Ensure that the campus style guide for the brand and brand website are up to date and accessible to all partners across campus.
  • Integrates visual identity research into comprehensive brand analysis.
Design Support:
Working in collaboration across Strategic Relations and Communications, the Visual Identity Manager will be called upon to support graphic design work related to the visual identity and other projects as assigned.
  • Works with campus partners to design type treatments, wordmark, partner and co-brands for the campus – with the associated time and project management necessary.
  • Builds lockups and other visual identity collateral.
  • Properly package and submit design files for use by campus partners.

  • This is a hybrid position.

What We Can Offer
  • The salary range for this 50% position is $30,000-$35,000.

What We Require
  • Minimum one year of experience in Visual Identity/Brand Management.
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.
What You Will Need
  • Attention to detail with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work under aggressive timelines, high workload volume and easily adaptable to change.

What We Would Like You To Have
  • Experience in Visual Identity/Brand Management in a higher education setting.
  • Industry experience in brand management, marketing or design.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Marketing, Design, Communication, Public Relations, or related field.
  • Computer and software skills: Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Cloud.
