The Department of Economics at Virginia Tech invites applications for three (3) open rank positions at the Assistant/Associate/Full Professor ranks.  The Department has been growing and will continue to hire several positions over the next few years.  All positions have an appointment start date of August 2018.

C – Mathematical and Quantitative Methods

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to collaborate with faculty across the university on the Data and Decision Destination Area (http://provost.vt.edu/destination-areas.html). This Destination Area focuses on advancing the human condition and society with better decisions through data.  Faculty working together in this area integrate data analytics and decision sciences across the transdisciplinary research and curriculum efforts at Virginia Tech and beyond.  Review of applications will begin on November 1, 2017 and continue until the position is filled.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to collaborate with faculty across the university on the Intelligent Infrastructure for Human-Centered Communities Destination Area (http://provost.vt.edu/destination-areas.html). This Destination Area focuses on the interdependencies between humans, community, and infrastructure with the ultimate goal of improving quality of life around the globe.  Preference will be given to candidates with strong empirical skills and interests in areas relating to technology, infrastructure and transportation.  Candidates specializing in other fields of Industrial Organization will be considered as long as they demonstrate strong empirical skills and a clear interest in policy. E – Macroeconomics and Monetary Economics

The Department has a strong theory group and is in the process of growing the applied areas. Candidates who complement or extend existing research areas are particularly encouraged to apply.  The successful applicant will have the opportunity to collaborate with faculty across the university on the Intelligent Infrastructure for Human-Centered Communities Destination Area (http://provost.vt.edu/destination-areas.html). This Destination Area focuses on the interdependencies between humans, community, and infrastructure with the ultimate goal of improving quality of life around the globe.  Applications must be received by November 30, 2017 to be guaranteed full consideration but will be accepted until the position is filled.

Required Qualifications: To receive consideration, applicants must have:
- A Ph.D. in economics or a closely related field earned before the appointment start date
- A publication track record in well-cited, peer reviewed journals that are commensurate with experience.  Candidates who are still in graduate school or have completed their Ph.D. less than a year ago must have at least two working papers that are under review or ready for submission
- Demonstrated effectiveness teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level

Candidates at the Associate or Full rank must demonstrate significant scholarship and teaching ability while candidates at the Assistant Professor level should show promise of significant scholarship and teaching ability.

The new hire will be expected to establish or continue development of scholarly activities and professional capabilities, conduct research, teach effectively at the undergraduate and graduate levels, participate in department, college, and university governance, and occasionally be required to travel to professional meetings and conferences.  Selected candidates will be required to complete a criminal conviction check.

Candidates at the Full and Associate rank should also provide a research statement. All applicants must provide names of three referees.
