Job Description Summary:

Designs and develops integrated solutions through tools, processes and procedures to facilitate the cost effective delivery of services or fielding of products. Performs testing and integration, maintenance and escalated problem resolution of systems, subsystems and components.

Job Description:

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Installs, configures, and maintains the administrative college wide server operating systems.

  • Ensures operating systems and applications throughout the college are up-to-date by evaluating and pushing patches onto systems as needed.

  • Analyzes, diagnoses, and resolves problems associated with server hardware, storage systems, backup systems, operating systems and applications software; coordinates with vendor software or hardware support to resolve system problems.

  • Designs, implements, and maintains security levels to restrict and block unauthorized access to servers and services.

  • Provides input with developing policies and standards for the connectivity, accessibility, and security of the administrative computer systems.

  • Collaborates with developing policies and standards for the connectivity, accessibility, and security of the administrative computer systems.

  • Maintains and upgrades servers, hardware, software, and operating systems.

  • Keeps current with the latest technology; regularly attends technical training in order to maintain technical expertise.

  • Designs and develops integrated solutions to meet business requirements or enhance performance.

  • Performs and evaluates cost analyses and vendor comparisons of software/hardware systems to ensure cost-effective and efficient operations and measures feasibility of various approaches and makes recommendations.

  • Analyzes potential systems investments and prepares supporting documentation for recommendation(s) to management and customers based on results of independent assessment of current and future performance, stability, and systems management/life cycle issues.

  • Provides escalated technical support to customers by handling systems-related issues; may provide on-call technical support telephonically and/or electronically.

  • Analyzes and resolves program support deficiencies and conducts testing to enhance performance.

  • Conducts moderately complex projects or phases of significant projects; coordinates the efforts of technical support staff in the performance of assigned projects.

  • Applies advanced methods, theories and research techniques and assists in the development, implementation and documentation of processes and procedures to ensure compliance with standard business practices. Develops and implements training tools and documentation.

  • Provides technical consultation on current and proposed systems to other organizations and staff within the college.

  • Performs repairs, maintenance and upgrades of existing systems using solutions in accordance with standard operating procedures. Investigates and resolves matters of significance.

  • Provides work guidance to less experienced personnel.

  • Helps to train and oversee the work of other systems engineering staff.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge

Must possess required knowledge and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • WAN and LAN technologies and protocols.

  • Networked server systems access and security guidelines and procedures.

  • Server performance tuning and troubleshooting techniques.

  • Current trends and information sources for managing networked physical, virtual, and cloud based server systems.

  • Project planning and management principles.

  • System backup and disaster recovery procedures and techniques.

  • IT Service Management principles such as ITIL.

Skills

Must possess required skills and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • Physical & virtual sever administration (deployment, server operating system installation, patching maintenance, etc.)

  • Troubleshooting - Systems analysis (server resource sizing based on use, etc.)

  • Assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects, and demands.

  • Maintaining confidentiality of work-related information and materials.

  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

  • Maintaining an established work schedule and providing on-call assistance including some nights and weekends.

  • Effectively using interpersonal and communications skills including tact and diplomacy.

  • Effectively using organizational and planning skills, including attention to detail and follow-through.

Technology Skills
  • Installing, maintaining, modifying, and upgrading server operating systems, server software, and server hardware.

  • Assessing systems support needs and developing and promoting effective solutions.

Required Work Experience
  • Three years related work experience.

Preferred Work Experience
  • Four or more years of experience with systems administration, systems engineering, or operating systems programming including experience with one or more of the following: Linux Servers, Windows Servers, VMWare ESXi clusters, or VMWare Horizon View VDI server environments.

  • Experience working with computer hardware, operating system software and desktop applications with a specific concentration in one or more areas.

  • Experience working with one or more structured programming languages.

  • Experience working with design principles and applications.

Required Education
  • High school diploma or educational equivalent.

Preferred Education
  • Bachelor's degree in systems engineering, computer science, management information systems, or related field preferred.

Licenses/Certifications; Other
  • Certifications ITIL, VCP, VCAP, Linux+ (Comp TIA), GCUX (SANS GIAC) or MCS.

Preferred Licenses/Certifications; Other
  • Relevant industry certifications, e.g. Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE)
Physical Requirements
  • Work is performed in a standard office or similar environment.

  • Subject to standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, pushing, and pulling.

  • Occasional lifting of objects up to 20 pounds.

ACC Benefits Overview

Full-time faculty and staffing table employees who work in full-time and/or part-time positions at the college are eligible for ACC medical benefits effective the first of the month after their first 60 days of employment. Benefits include medical, dental, life insurance, short- and long-term disability, retirement plans and AD&D.

ACC does not participate in Social Security. ACC participates in the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) and the Optional Retirement Program (ORP-Faculty and Administrators Only). Part-time and Hourly employees participate in the ACC Money Purchase Plan (ACCMPP) as a retirement program required by federal law.
