POSITION DETAILS

Founded in 1971 in Long Island City, Queens, LaGuardia Community College is one of seven community colleges of the City University of New York/CUNY.  In 2019, LaGuardia served over 30,000 students in pre-college, associate degree, and continuing education programs.  Major areas of study include Health Sciences, STEM, Business and Technology, and Liberal Arts.  Consistent with the diversity of Queens, 56 percent of LaGuardia students are born outside of the United States.  More than half are first-generation college students.  Sixty-nine percent live in Queens; the rest come from Brooklyn and beyond.  Virtually all LaGuardia students are ethnic minorities (88 percent), 58 percent are women, and 31 percent are over the age of 25.  Forty-eight percent of LaGuardia students are Hispanic, making the college a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI).  Sixty-six percent of LaGuardia students receive financial aid.  Slightly less than half attend part-time, often because they need to work to support their families.  LaGuardia ranked fifth among U.S. community colleges in economic mobility – moving low-income students into the middle class and beyond – in a 2017 Stanford University study.  For more information about LaGuardia please visit www.laguardia.edu.

The Director of Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) is responsible for guiding Center operations and activities designed to foster academic success for LaGuardia’s ‘new majority students,’ with a focus on pedagogical, advising, and technology innovations that foster equitable opportunities for faculty, staff, and student learning.  Combining broad leadership responsibilities with program management functions and staff supervision, the Director has oversight responsibility for CTL programming, including seminars and other professional development activities, as well as engagement with Academic Affairs leadership teams connected to priority, college-wide initiatives around learning assessment and student success.

As the senior leader of the Center, the Director oversees and assumes responsibility for a wide range of tasks.  Serving as an educator, supervisor, and manager, the Director is committed to building the Center’s capacity to serve and help strengthen teaching and learning at the College. Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs, the Director guides and supports CTL teams in planning seminars and workshops, coordinating with faculty leaders, preparing grant proposals and reports to funders, and developing approaches that help to build the Center’s capacity to address key issues of learning and teaching, especially around challenges stemming from learning disrupted by the pandemic.  This position requires well-developed knowledge of and experience with the processes of faculty and student learning, as well as knowledge and skill in management and program development.  Responsibilities include the following:

  • Implement and evaluate CTL project goals and targets each year through the Strategic Plan and Administrative & Educational Supports (AES) frameworks;
  • Provide assessment of the impact of services in the context of diversity and equity goals;
  • Oversee Development and Implementation of mini-grant ePortfolio/Assessment projects for program improvement and curricular renewal;
  • Oversee all CTL budgeting processes including creating projections, complying with Research Foundation (RF) and Tax Levy processes and regulations, ensuring proper and efficient expenditure of all funds, and meeting all budget and reporting deadlines;
  • Meet with departmental chairpersons to determine programming to support faculty’s professional growth as instructors, scholars, and leaders in college activities;
  • Work with staff and faculty partners to design and implement seminar and workshop activities that support the College’s Strategic Plan goals and objectives, such as First Year Seminar and Capstone courses, ePortfolio, and digital badging, and peer mentoring;
  • Incorporate effective DEI structures and programming that attend to students’ and faculty’s needs, including accessibility defined broadly (UDL, OER, language diversity, social-emotional wellness);
  • Guide professional development opportunities for all CTL staff, with a focus on building their capacity to design and deliver educational programs;
  • Collaborate closely with CTL administrative staff to ensure effective HR and financial systems and processes for seminar compensation, peer mentoring recruitment and payroll, and vendor payments; and
  • Provide information and input on the Center’s budgets and funding streams.
