About the University:

About the Program:

The Writing & Multiliteracy Center (WMC) is an academic program within the John Spoor Broome Library, offering classes on writing & multiliteracy center theory and practices, supporting approximately 5000 writing and multiliteracy tutoring sessions (in person, virtual, and asynchronous) per fiscal year, delivering 100 workshops covering 45 topics, conducting faculty consultations, and hosting activities and events such as Writing Boot Camps, Open Mics, and the annual Plot-a-thon Data Visualization Festival that invites students to compete using data visualizations and storytelling. WMC manages its own HyFlex teaching classroom and a Multimedia Studio with sound room, green screen, and group presentation space. WMC also coordinates a popular Embedded Multiliteracy Tutor (EMT) program supporting writing and communication intensive courses across disciplines from first-year writing to senior capstones. The EMT program involves close faculty collaboration in the design of tutor interventions, customization of virtual and in-person academic activities, and support for writing or communication-related assignments.

WMC’s mission is to provide students and faculty with a range of support services and programs that help them address 21st Century challenges of creatively thinking about, reading, and composing in written, oral, visual, multimodal, and digital forms of communications. We aim to foster a robust culture of writing and communication at CI, with an interest in helping students across disciplines learn modes of representation and communication that shape their academic, working, civic, and private lives. About the Position:

The Lecturer/Assistant Director is a faculty position that requires understanding and application of writing center principles, practices, and methods as well as an ability to exhibit a high degree of professionalism as a result of contact with students, faculty, staff, campus senior administrators, and the public. The Assistant Director will join an energetic and creative WMC team consisting of a Faculty Director (Associate Professor), a full-time Associate Director (Lecturer), a Administrative Support Coordinator (ASC), 4 Academic Leads for grant-funded projects, 43 undergraduate and professional WMC tutors, and 5 student assistants. Working with the Faculty and Associate Director, the Assistant Director has a wide-ranging portfolio of responsibilities including operations, tutor recruitment and hiring, tutor education, social media outreach, and data analysis and assessment of programs. The Assistant Director will teach one tutor training course per year.

Minimum Degree Requirements:

M.A. in English, Rhetoric and Composition, or related field

Required Qualifications:

M.A. in English, Rhetoric and Composition, or related field
    • 1 or more years of experience in teaching at a university or college environment (one year of full time or two years of part time work)

    • Understanding of composition theory and its application

    • Demonstrate strong writing skills and strong oral/visual communication skills

    • Flexible and creative in solving problems and performing multiple responsibilities in a diverse community and team environment

    • Self-starter; ability to learn quickly

    • Highly detailed oriented and ability to multitask

    • Ability to exhibit a high-level of professionalism in self-presentation, communication, and engagement with various university stakeholders

    • Ability to apply effective cross-cultural interpersonal and communication skills with students, faculty, staff, senior administrators, and the public.

  • Applicants should demonstrate the commitment to effectively work with and engage a diverse student population and evidence of how they would successfully mentor minoritized students with special focus on Latinx, Black/African American, American Indian, and Asian/Asian American/Pacific Islander students.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in teaching college-level writing

  • Experience in work related to writing center administration or as a writing tutor

  • Experience in teaching oral communication, STEM writing, and/or technical writing

  • Demonstrated excellence in student-centered instruction

  • Ability to collect, analyze, report, and assess data relevant to the position

  • Experience working with individuals of diverse ages, as well as from various socioeconomic, cultural, and academic background

  • Interest in research and publishing in the field of writing and/or writing center studies

  • Experience working with individuals of diverse ages, as well as from various socioeconomic, cultural, and academic background

  • Fluency in Spanish is welcome

Responsibilities:

Operations, Leadership and Strategic Planning
  • Provide day to day administrative leadership with the Associate Director over a range of center activities occurring both virtually and in-person: this may include tracking staff attendance, troubleshooting technical issues on TutorTrac (tutor management system), identifying correct entries, supporting tutors in tutorial sessions, managing interactions between staff and students, creating of daily schedule for in person sessions

  • Coordinate and organize on-going tutor education programming with the support of the Faculty and Associate Directors and members of the administrative team: organizing training days workshops, overseeing tutor buddies mentoring program

  • Attend weekly WMC Administration Meetings with Directors and ASC; generate weekly TutorTrac reports and track visits data for meetings; create and distribute weekly Admin meeting agendas;

  • Provide assistance in the analysis and assessment of programs

  • Stay current in the writing and multiliteracy center field

Teaching and Training
  • Teach UNIV 299, a 3-unit WMC tutor education seminar or equivalent, at least once a year

  • Support the assessment and review of in-person, virtual, and asynchronous tutorial practices of all tutors in coordination with the Associate and Faculty Director; coordinate end of semester conferences involving tutor meetings with WMC Directors

  • Provide TutorTrac training and regularly check its usage by tutors and student assistants

  • Design and lead in-person/virtual WMC workshops in coordination with and the support of the Associate Director/Faculty Director

  • Mentor embedded tutors and develop workshops for and alongside embedded tutors who are assigned to give workshops for classes in which they are embedded

  • Create weekly citations and follow up with each tutor on completion and training in all citation styles utilized at CSUCI

  • Create and update tutor schedules on TutorTrac; coordinate with Associate Director to align schedules with EMT course visits;

  • Coordinate and track WMC staff professional development projects

  • Provide at least 2 hours of tutoring weekly or as needed

Communication, Recruitment, and Outreach
  • Send weekly announcements to all tutors/staff

  • Coordinate the accessibility of WMC documents, slideshows, and other materials on website or shared digitally; support the creation of accessible Canvas modules of EMT courses; collaborate with DASS to identify other ways to improve accessibility and support students

  • Coordinate WMC outreach: coordinate social media and publicity material working with members of the administrative and tutor team; and align WMC public messaging; coordinate Open Mic events with WMC tutors, Library, and campus stakeholders; develop innovative ways improve outreach to students; improve collaboration with other units across campus

  • Coordinate WMC recruitment by working with the Associate Director and administrative team members to advertise, recruit, interview, and hire tutors

  • Collect, monitor and assess data for WMC programs in coordination with the Associate Director and the Faculty Director; support the writing of WMC reports
