Job Summary

The College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking candidates for a Veterinary Assistant, Technician, or Specialist to support the inpatient IMC / ICU . These positions perform a variety of tasks related to the care and treatment of animal patients. Under direct supervision, this position assists in the monitoring and treatment of all patients admitted to the hospital.

This is an overnight shift rotating monthly between weekends and weekdays; Monday – Thursday 10:00PM – 8:00AM, Friday -Sunday 7:00PM – 8:00AM.

Essential Functions

1. Assists with administering treatments and monitoring patients admitted in IMC or ICU, Observes and records vital data, abnormal signs, body weight, food/water intake of animals, and collects and labels specimens and perform treatments and administer medications as prescribed by primary veterinarian.
2. Performs and demonstrates veterinary care techniques and procedures related to emergency and critical care medicine.
3. Assists veterinarians in the care of patients requiring advanced procedures and life-saving techniques including CPR, mechanical ventilation and dialysis.
4. Inspects facilities, equipment, and supplies daily, as well as observes health status of animals, environmental conditions, temperature, and sanitation.
5. Perform job duties with speed and accuracy and work as essential personnel, providing care for patients after hours, on weekends and holidays.
6. Assists with emergency triage and stabilization of patients presenting through the Emergency service
7. May be responsible for, or assist in, billing clients, inputting charges, and/or similar tasks

Depending on the combination of education and experience, selected candidates may be hired as a Veterinary Assistant, Technician, or Specialist and assigned Levels I, II, or III . Salary range is determined by eligibility for Level I, II, or III .

Consideration for entry-level Veterinary Assistant requires:
A high school diploma or equivalent

Consideration for entry-level Veterinary Technician requires:
1. Associate’s degree or higher in a technical or scientific field related to the area of assignment.
2. Active license with the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medicine as a Veterinary Technician, have met all requirements to become licensed, or have passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam ( VTNE ). Veterinary Technician certification or license must be obtained within 6 months of employment. Salary range determined by eligibility for Level I, II or III .

Consideration for entry-level Veterinary Specialist requires:
1. Associates degree in a technical or scientific field related to area of assignment plus 3 years of experience.
2. Veterinary Technician Certification having passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam ( VTNE ); Veterinary Technician Specialist in Emergency and Critical Care ~ VTS ( ECC ) as designated by Academy of Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care Technicians ( AVECCT ).
Salary range determined by eligibility for Level I, II or III .
