The Roger Williams University School of Law Library seeks an experienced law librarian for the position of Associate Law Librarian, Research and Administration. The successful candidate will join a fantastic library team in a supportive library environment and a forward thinking law school with the mission "to prepare students for success in the public and private sectors and to promote social justice and the rule of law through engaged teaching, learning, and scholarship."

Under the direction of the Assistant Dean for Library and Information Services, the Associate Law Librarian, Research and Administration is responsible for management of the law library and for initiating and monitoring library services and programs. The Associate Law Librarian directly supervises the Research Services unit, which includes coordination of the unit's work with the Law Library's other units and initiatives, and supporting relationships with library patrons, the School of Law, the University, and others. The Associate Law Librarian, Research and Administration assists with budgeting, facilities planning, personnel hiring and administration, and technology operations of the law library as a whole.

Administration Functions

  • Work with the Assistant Dean on the development, promulgation, and implementation of library goals, objectives, policies, and procedures.
  • Maintain internal library guides and documentation to ensure continuity of library operations.
  • Participate with the Assistant Dean in law library short and long-term and strategic planning.
  • Assist in the preparation of law library capital expenditure and operations budget requests.
  • Oversee library data collection and reporting by the Research Services unit.
  • Prepare reports for the Assistant Dean, the School of Law, and its accrediting organizations.
  • Coordinate, approve, and process leave requests from the library staff; maintain and adjust as needed automated timecards and leave records on the University's time keeping system as well as maintaining the library's shared leave calendar.
  • Serve as Chief Executive of the Library in the absence of the Assistant Dean.
  • Initiate and monitor library programs and services to ensure the Law Library provides support to all members of the School of Law community.
  • Coordinate complex activities and projects within the library.
  • Assist with the law library personnel recruitment process.
  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate the performances of the members of the Research Services unit.
  • Support the Library's relationships within the Law School, the University, library consortia, and professional organizations.
  • Serve on School of Law and University committees as assigned by the Assistant Dean and the Dean of the School of Law.
  • Contribute to the advancement of the profession, and of the Law School, by participating in professional organizations and contributing to professional literature.

Research Services Functions

  • Provide leadership and coordination in the planning for, implementation of, and review of all policies and services related to reference, research, faculty services, circulation and access, reserves, interlibrary loan, engagement, general instructional services, and other library matters directly affecting library patrons.
  • Maintain culturally responsive reference and research services for law school students, faculty, administrators, and staff that reflect our commitment to an increasingly diverse community.
  • Oversee and participate in the design, implementation, and delivery of instructional services and presentations to further the Law Library's mission and objectives.
  • Oversee and engage in supporting full-time faculty and identifying library resources and services needed for their research, scholarship, and teaching.
  • Oversee and provide support for the hiring, scheduling, training, supervision, and timekeeping of student library employees.
  • Coordinate and participate in the design, development, and maintenance of web-based guides and related resources to support access to library resources and services.
  • Coordinate and participate in the design and development of social media content and related resources to promote the value of library services and resources.
  • Coordinate and manage the development and implementation of an appropriate assessment of student and faculty services, using input from the staff in the Research Services unit.
  • Encourage, explore, and promote the development of new activities, services, and tools for providing student and faculty services in support of the library's mission.
  • Stay current on new developments in technology related to delivery of legal reference and research.

Collection Development Functions

  • Assist in overall collection development and maintenance.
  • Evaluate and recommend digital information resources and tools as part of overall collection development.
  • Participate in the evaluation of the collection in light of the changing needs and priorities of legal researchers and legal research instruction; provide the Assistant Law Librarian, Collection Services, and the Assistant Dean with information to inform decisions regarding acquisition and/or retention of materials.
  • Assist in planning and budgeting for digital resources.

Systems and Digital Resources Functions

  • Participate in the evaluation and implementation of current and emerging technologies to maximize usage of the Library's digital resources and to improve library workflow.
  • Participate in the selection of software for the Law Library.
  • Assist, as needed, with library communications to the University Information Technology Department for network issues related to the Library's integrated online library system and other networked systems, such as the Library's proxy service and platforms using single sign-on.
  • Provide communications and administrative assistance supporting interactions between the Library and the Library's integrated online library system provider and customer representatives regarding upgrades, improvements, problems, and changes to the system.
  • Coordinate with appropriate library staff to identify and resolve issues related to the Library's integrated online library system, other networked systems, and other computer/digital resources.
  • Oversee the use and development of the Library's Springshare software suite of digital guides, calendars, and assessment tools.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of the Library's web presence, assuring that it is consistent with appropriate School of Law and University policies.
  • Communicate to library staff general information relating to library systems and technology.


Job Requirements:
  • J.D. from an ABA accredited law school.
  • Master of Library Science degree or equivalent from an ALA accredited library school.
  • Five or more years of demonstrated supervisory, management, or leadership experience as a professional law librarian in an academic law library.
  • Experience in research instruction, applied educational technology, and assessment.
  • Strong service orientation.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills to interact with faculty, students, visitors, and staff.
  • Ability to function as a team member and work independently with little or no supervision.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks and projects.
  • Attention to detail needed to complete tasks in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Ability to work evening and weekend hours.
  • Dedication to professional development.
  • Intermediate computer skills, including a working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Web design experience.
  • Experience with integrated library systems and law library technologies in an academic library setting.

At the University's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be excepted where the candidate can demonstrate, to the satisfaction of the University, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
