About Research, Instruction, and Access Services:
Research, Instruction, and Access Services (RIAS) is responsible for an array of services and programs to meet the research, teaching, and learning needs of the University of Oregon community. RIAS encompasses six major areas: Research and Instructional Services, Data Services, Undergraduate Engagement, E-learning and OER, Access Services, and five of the Branch Libraries (Design Library, the Portland Library and Learning Commons, Price Science Commons & Research Library (PSC), the Mathematics Library, and the Loyd and Dorothy Rippey Library at the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology). Research, Instruction, and Access Services provides transformative educational experiences for students and accelerates the University's research endeavors by facilitating access to information services and resources, building collections, fostering interdisciplinary engagement, innovating information services at each stage of the research lifecycle across disciplines, and providing information and data literacy programming online and face to face, in addition to promoting affordable course materials by offering initiatives and programs to support the adoption of Open Educational Resources (OER). Position Summary
The University of Oregon Libraries is seeking its next Associate Vice Provost and University Librarian for Research, Instruction, and Access Services (AVPUL-RIAS) to move forward an ambitious agenda. After more than a year of pandemic-affected operations, we are rebuilding personnel ranks and rethinking the way we work and serve our community. The successful candidate will join a new executive team at a time when UO Libraries is developing a fresh vision and an innovative strategic design for a sustainable, global, and just information future.

The AVPUL-RIAS will collaborate with the Libraries Leadership Team and Administrative Team to achieve overall organizational goals and build a strong culture of engagement and shared decision making. The AVPUL-RIAS will be responsible for leadership and administration of the Research, Instruction, and Access Services division, which includes six major areas:

  • Research and Instructional Services
  • Data Services
  • Undergraduate Engagement
  • eLearning and Open Educational Resources
  • Access Services
  • Five Branch Libraries including Design, Mathematics, the Portland Library and Learning Commons, the Price Science Commons and Research Library, and the Rippey Library (Oregon Institution of Marine Biology)

    The successful candidate will shape organizational structure by developing connections between these areas to facilitate interdepartmental communication, synergies, training, and operational activities. In addition, the successful candidate will build and sustain strong relationships with external campus stakeholders whose work intersects with RIAS units to develop complementary and impactful partnerships.

    As a member of the Libraries' senior leadership team, the AVPUL-RIAS helps implement the Libraries' strategic plan, support institutional goals and build a strong culture of engagement and shared decision making. Further, they participate in key planning, budget, operations, and personnel decisions for the organization and lead an evolving portfolio of projects and priorities in a collaborative, dynamic, and rapidly changing environment.

    Minimum Requirements
    Minimum qualifications for the rank of Associate Librarian:
  • Master's Degree in Library/Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution, or international equivalent.
  • Six years post-MLIS or post-international equivalent progressively responsible library services leadership/management experience in an academic or research library to include experience in public services, to include supervisory experience.

    Minimum qualifications for the rank of Senior Librarian:
  • Master's Degree in Library/Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution, or international equivalent.
  • Twelve years post-MLIS or post-international equivalent progressively responsible library services leadership/management experience in an academic or research library to include experience in public services, to include supervisory experience.
    Professional Competencies
  • In-depth knowledge of contemporary library research consulting services, information pedagogy, data services, open educational resources, and/or access services.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of contemporary trends and key issues in research libraries and technology services.
  • Strong diplomacy and negotiation skills; ability to bring key stakeholders together across differences to achieve goals.
  • Ability to foster team commitment and trust.
  • Proven ability to motivate and inspire team members.
  • Skill with proactive and supportive performance management.
  • Ability to foster creativity and innovation by providing new insights into situations, questioning conventional approaches, encouraging new ideas, and supporting the design and implementation of new or novel programs/processes.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally with people from different backgrounds and with diverse life experiences and learning styles.
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills, with ability to manage workload, priorities, and deadlines to achieve goals.
  • Ability to support and enhance a diverse learning and working environment.
    Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of current higher education policy environment, and experience with library and campus policy review, development, implementation, and training.
  • Strong record of contribution to the profession.
  • Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing equity, inclusion, and/or accessibility.
