The Epidemiology Department is seeking a Research Data Abstractor/Clinic Technician who will be responsible for reviewing and abstracting research data and medical records from participants of several epidemiologic studies, most of whom are 70 years and older. Duties include medical record abstraction from paper and electronic records for the ARIC, CLUE, and other studies including ICD code review and ascertainment for strokes and deaths. Abstraction duties also include maintaining abstractor certification.

Clinic Technician duties include scheduling and escorting participants to local imaging centers; data entry of forms and information; performing blood pressures; obtaining weight, height, and other anthropometric measurements; performing interviews; performing physical function testing; and other tasks as needed. This position will interact with study participants and their families, as well as Comstock Center staff and faculty, Data Coordinating Centers for the different studies, and others as needed. Abstraction duties will account for approximately 1-2 days per week, clinic duties will account for approximately 3-4 days per week.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • This person will provide research abstraction and clinic support mainly for the ARIC, CLUE, and ACHIEVE studies.
  • Will review medical records for relevant ICD and procedure codes and data, abstract information and identify appropriate section of medical records for duplication.
  • Redact medical records as necessary.
  • Will perform and administer visit procedures and interviews according to study protocol, including: quality assurance, reception, record updates, consent/HIPAA, and anthropometry.
  • Perform physical functions and physical activity testing, sitting BP, hearing/vision testing, medication update, dietary interview, and other duties as assigned.
  • Will install research devices such as patches and activity watches onto participants, and provide instruction for the device use.
  • Assist in screening potentially eligible participants over the telephone, and scheduling eligible participants for study visits.
  • Recruit and schedule participants for imaging procedures.
  • Meet participants at local imaging centers and administer consent forms/assist them during their visits.
  • Will also assist with data entry, telephone interviews, and ongoing quality control.
  • Maintain certification in study procedures as per protocol.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as directed.
  • Local travel to imaging providers, participant and nursing homes to conduct home visits is required.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • High School Diploma/GED, some medical or professional office experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with medical records or coding.
  • Medical assistant/office experience, medical records, or experience conducting research procedures preferred.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Medical terminology knowledge and experience navigating medical records systems helpful.
  • Sensitivity and discretion required to interact with aging participants who may have hearing and cognitive decline, as well as changing life circumstances.
  • Understanding and adherence to compliance and confidentiality policies and procedures, particularly concerning medical/research information.
  • Must be familiar with operating personal or laptop computers using Windows operating system.
  • Excellent interview and/or telephone skills preferred.
  • Ease in interacting with people; including tasks such as applying a blood pressure cuff, measuring waist and arm circumferences, and applying small skin patches which measure heart rhythm.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time.
  • Hearing/visual ability appropriate for the purposes of assessing and communicating with study participants during testing and interviews.
  • Ability to move around study participants for the purposes of performing procedures and assessing their weight, physical activity levels and gait.
  • Hand/wrist movements required to use a keyboard/mouse and other small devices.
