THE SEARCH                                                                   

 

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, one of the nation’s pre-eminent research universities seeks a collaborative, results-driven leader to serve as its next controller.

 

Reporting to the Vice President for Finance, the controller will be a key member of the financial leadership team responsible for financial management and stewardship of approximately $2.6B in annual expenditures and for ensuring Institute’s accounting procedures conform to GAAP.  In the current configuration, the controller supervises a team of approximately 55 employees, including 5 direct reports and oversees accounts receivable, financial accounting and reporting, global operations, the property office, sponsored accounting and tax. The controller is also responsible for monitoring and providing services to meet the evolving demands of an increasingly global institution. The controller works closely with the MIT Investment Management Company (MITIMCo) to understand and reflect investments, one of the more complicated aspects of MIT’s accounting, within MIT’s financial statements.

 

The next controller must understand the value, importance, and challenges of supporting world class researchers while meeting the complex accounting and financial reporting requirements of a leading research university. The successful candidate will possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, critical problem-solving abilities, and bring a demonstrated track record of cross-campus collaboration. In addition, the controller must be able to lead and motivate others towards the accomplishment of shared goals in support of MIT’s mission.

 

For this critical position, MIT is seeking a strategic leader to work closely with, and provide accurate and timely financial information to, MIT’s senior leadership, the Risk and Audit Committee of the MIT Corporation, and other high-level committees as necessary, to support and further the research and educational mission of the Institute and to ensure that it achieves it operational and financial objectives. The controller will foster and maintain strong relationships with MIT departments, labs and centers to promote a strong sense of financial collaboration while providing sound fiscal analysis and advice.

 

For this critical position, MIT is seeking a strategic leader deeply committed to supporting MIT’s research goals by providing the highest quality of financial support. The successful candidate will possess deep accounting expertise and broad managerial experience combined with a collegial style that engenders trust and fosters collaboration. A bachelor’s degree and a CPA certification are required. An MBA or other advanced degree in accounting, finance, business, or a related field is preferred. Candidates must have a minimum of 10 years of experience as an accounting professional, including senior management experience in higher education. Equivalent experience at a public accounting firm with a higher education client base may be considered.
