The Biological Sciences Laboratory Manager is responsible for the successful and safe implementation of instructional laboratories. Managerial duties include planning and coordinating the preparation of materials for student labs, ordering and maintaining an inventory of equipment and supplies, performing minor repairs and maintenance as needed, and managing and monitoring supplies and personnel budgets. The lab manager will assist faculty with the design of lab set ups and protocols, and hire, train, monitor and supervise lab staff. The lab manager will assist in implementing programs to facilitate compliance with OSHA standards, chemical hygiene plans, biohazard safety, chemical and biological waste disposal, and general lab safety protocols and procedures and will provide leadership with respect to safety procedures. This position requires meticulous preparation of materials for microbiology, cell biology, genetics and other biology labs as assigned, including handling microbes, media, stains and chemicals. Continuing education in lab safety and lab techniques is an important part of this job. This job requires excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.

  • Organizes schedules for lab equipment usage and preparation procedures. Manages, supervises, trains, schedules and hires lab aid workers.
  • Directs the operational and logistical needs of labs listed below
  • Coordinates maintenance of labs & prep rooms with plant operations, IT and AV services as needed
  • Organizes the schedules for lab equipment usage and the preparation procedures for Cell Biology, Microbiology 107 and 200, Genetics, Environmental Sciences, Biology for Engineers, Horticulture, Botany, Soil Science, Undergraduate Research, and Honors Biology projects. Provides the preparation procedures for above listed courses.
  • Negotiates purchasing contracts with outside vendors. Manages budgets. Keeps track of spending
  • Serves as the biology safety officer and chemical hygiene officer ensuring compliance with
  • FDA and OSHA regulations
  • Assists the division in planning, preparing, monitoring and reporting progress for grants (eg,Perkins or NSF)
  • Works closely with the lab manager in the Laurel campus
  • Collaborates with faculty in the development of new lab experiments and supervises testing. Interprets and troubleshoots new data generation. Provides instruction to use and operate new equipment and software. Assists faculty with testing experimental protocols & experiments as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION

• Laboratory Aides, 8-10 per year part-time

- Bachelor's degree in the biological sciences with at least two years of experience; supervision and teaching experience preferred - Besides the science background, one must have expertise in equipment maintenance and repair, microbiological media preparation, maintaining bacterial culture, chemical handling, storage, purchasing and budgets, computers (Word, Excel, etc), teaching and supervising - Must be able to operate and maintain all basic science equipment plus computers, digital spec 20's, vitalometer environmental chambers, gel electrophoresis, autoclaves, centrifuges, incubators and water baths, western blot machines and various other equipment utilized in cell biology, genetics, microbiology, bioengineering, environmental sciences - Scientific catalogs for ordering, scientific texts, manuals or articles for new lab ideas and/or alterations. - Knowledge of Federal and State Regulations for the management of pathogens, and chemicals and other hazards. Ability to maintain safe working conditions in all biology labs and prep areas

- Regular attendance is a requirement of this job.
