Position Title Web Editor The Opportunity

The Web Editor is a key member of the Office of Communications & Marketing, which is charged with helping build affinity for Mines while becoming a “top of mind, first choice” university for students, employees, and public and private partners. As the manager of Mines’ top marketing asset, its website, the editor plays a critical role in helping external and internal audiences come to know and better understand Mines and its people, programs and priorities. In addition to directing and facilitating top-level site design and construction, the editor will lead content development and SEO practices for key web properties and build, empower and lead a campus-wide team of web authors in their activities to develop clean, clear and accessible sites and content. As Mines prepares to redesign and redevelop its website with an external partner in 2022-23, the editor will play a leading role in helping prepare for and execute this transition, while ensuring that Mines’ website tells an even more consistent and powerful story about Mines.

Reporting to the Director of Digital Strategy and Insights, the editor is a key member of the digital and editorial teams. The position is eligible for a hybrid work assignment but will need to be based in Colorado

Responsibilities

WEBSITE ADMINISTRATION, DEVELOPMENT AND DESIGN
  • Manage the development and redevelopment of Mines.edu sites with a particular focus on those external-facing sites focused on brand building, recruitment, revenue generation and partnership development.

  • Individually, as well as alongside external partners, develop, test and refine templates for program landing pages, academic departments, administrative units and individual faculty pages.

  • Partner with external development and hosting partner, as well as Mines’ IT office, to ensure Mines.edu is operational, safe, secure, reliable and accessible.

  • Build, test and continually revise pages and sites designed to drive applications and revenue for Mines.

  • Follow website standards and procedures to ensure that Mines.edu and related properties are developed and maintained in accordance with best practices and legal requirements.

CONTENT EDITOR, MANAGER, WRITER
  • Promote and advance the reputation of Mines, its people and its programs by creating, updating, optimizing and/or maintaining top-level content on the university’s website.

  • As SEO expert, train and support colleagues in the Office of Communications and Marketing and other offices to help them produce, place and optimize content on the website to dramatically increase organic web traffic to Mines.edu, the Mines Newsroom and other web properties.

  • Enforce editorial style on the web, as well as Mines’ brand standards and messaging.

THOUGHT LEADERSHIP, TRAINING, REPORTING
  • Maintain the tools, practices and reports necessary to continually assess, report on and improve upon website and web content approaches.

  • Serve as key liaison to web authors in the academic and administrative units to ensure all web and publication content adheres to university messaging and meets editorial, brand and graphic standards.

  • Serve as a voice of campus web authors and users (including during website redesign and possible CMS transition) to help ensure that the CMS, site architecture, policies and procedures serve the short- and long-term needs of our community.

  • Routinely research emerging trends and advancements in web design and development, web content production and SEO, and recommend resulting strategies and best practices.

  • Lead trainings and produce materials that share knowledge and expertise with the larger campus community, including faculty, staff, students and executive leadership.

  • Recruit, train, motivate, and oversee work product for student workers and freelancers for web projects.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree and four years in web support and development, digital marketing, search engine optimization (SEO) or a closely related discipline.
  • Understanding of enterprise web content management systems including WordPress Mines’ current CMS is WordPress, although we are looking at several options for a new system.

  • Strong proficency of web analytics tools including Google Analytics and SiteImprove.

  • Understanding of content development, design and SEO best practices and activities.

  • Experience writing for websites and/or marketing campaigns.

  • Experience working in a fast-paced, outcomes-oriented organization.

  • Experience supervising interns, freelancers and student workers.

Pay Range

$75,000 - $76,300

Mines takes into consideration a combination of candidate’s education, training and experience as well as the position’s scope and complexity, the discretion and latitude required in the role, work location, and external market and internal value when determining a salary level for potential new employees.
