Pediatric Cardiac Intensivist

Pediatric Critical Care, Department of Pediatrics

University of Utah Spencer F. Eccles School of Medicine

The Division of Pediatric Critical Care at the University of Utah Spencer F. Eccles School of Medicine has an immediate opening for a pediatric cardiac intensivist.  Clinical responsibilities will include sharing 24/7 inhouse coverage of the 16 bed Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) at Primary Children’s Hospital (PCH) with the existing group of 8 pediatric cardiac intensivists. Expansion of the CICU service to 6 additional cardiac intermediate care beds is anticipated in the next 1-2 years.  The CICU at PCH provides preoperative and postoperative care for infants, children and adults with congenital heart disease, and medical intensive care for patients with nonsurgical cardiovascular diseases.  We support an active congenital heart surgery program, with 4 full-time congenital heart surgeons performing over 500 surgeries a year. We also support a rapidly growing mechanical circulatory support/ventricular assist device program in close collaboration with the Division of Pediatric Cardiology. There are active fellowship programs in pediatric critical care and pediatric cardiology. The division has a strong record of extramural funding and publications. The division is well represented in national quality improvement collaborative networks such as the Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Consortium and Virtual PICU systems. In addition to clinical service, there is an expectation for academic work, including education, investigation, administration/service, as well as advocacy.

The Division of Pediatric Critical Care at the University of Utah provides intensive care services for patients with critical illnesses admitted to Primary Children’s 28-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and 16-bed Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU). There are over 2,000 PICU and 600 CICU admissions annually. The units are staffed with pediatric residents, nurse practitioners, Pediatric Critical Care fellows, and board- certified critical care pediatricians.

Qualified candidates must be Board Eligible/Board Certified in both Pediatrics and Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, and must have additional training or experience in pediatric cardiology, cardiac anesthesiology or pediatric cardiac intensive care.  Experience in research, quality improvement, education, or other scholarly activity that advances clinical medicine is also required.  The successful candidate will receive a faculty appointment on the Clinical or Tenure track at the academic level commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The Department and University offers a competitive salary and an unmatched benefits program, including non-contributory retirement contributions of 20.2% of annual salary that vest immediately. The Department offers a faculty development and mentoring program designed to foster success in translational or basic research, quality improvement engagement, and excellence as educators.
