Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Disability Services Director, the Access Specialist plans and facilitates the implementation of appropriate accommodations, auxiliary aids and support services for students with disabilities.

Job Duties:


This list includes, but is not limited to the following:
  • Educates students about available, appropriate and reasonable accommodations.
  • Ensures implementation of reasonable accommodations that are consistent with the course of study and policies of the college, and maintain essential course requirements.
  • Coordinates accommodations for students needing lectures notes by note taker.
  • Coordinates accommodations for students needing scribes or lab assistance.
  • Assesses the most effective approach to accommodation for the students based on disability related need and equal access.
  • Provides training/education materials to students, staff and faculty pertaining to the provision of notes.
  • Provides effective accommodation to students in a timely manner (per DSS procedure, NIC policy).
  • Maintains and updates confidential files and program records accurately and securely.
  • Collaborates with faculty and administrators to implement reasonable accommodations for course-specific pedagogy and assessment for classroom, lab, clinical, experiential and online learning environments.
  • Informs faculty of academic accommodations and compliance with legal responsibilities, as well as instructional, programmatic or curriculum modifications.
  • Supports students in resolving disability and accessibility related issues that may create barriers to academic success; refers students to appropriate campus and community resources.
  • Uses effective problem solving and decision-making skills to identify and implement solutions to complex, sensitive issues and educate students in self-advocacy to help implement reasonable accommodations.
  • Participates in continuing education and training as is necessary to keep up job skills.
  • Participates in staff meetings, events and service training opportunities.
  • Participates in relevant professional development activities to stay informed of state and federal regulations regarding students with disabilities and special populations.
  • Maintains a positive, helpful, constructive attitude and work relationship with supervisor, college staff, students, and the community.

Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience : Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or other area related to the needs of the position and a minimum of one year full-time equivalent experience working with individuals who utilize assistive technology and/or working with individuals with disabilities is required; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required License and/or Certifications :

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Specific knowledge regarding working with individuals with medical conditions or disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, traumatic brain injury and/or individuals on the autism spectrum.
• Knowledge of, and ability to use, Assistive Technologies
• Ability to train others in the use of Assistive Technologies
• Excellent English language skills
• Proficiency using personal computer, including Microsoft Windows and Office applications
• Effective written, verbal and presentation skills
• Ability to operate standard office equipment including phone, fax, copier
