Job Summary:
Under limited supervision, this position is responsible for the day to day operations of the Student Wellness and Recreation Center (SWRC) including, but not limited to scheduling, staffing, planning, organizing, promoting, implementing, and supervising comprehensive Recreational Sports, Intramural and Fitness programs. This position also works closely with outdoor pursuits, auxiliary services, facilities operations, athletics, physical education, ASNIC, residence life, human resources. The mission of these programs is to provide opportunities that foster community, instill a sense of belonging through physical activity, and provide a positive environment for students to develop both personally and professionally by offering many opportunities for involvement.

Job Duties:


This list includes, but is not limited to the following:
  • Assists in the management of the operational, financial and personnel functions for all SWRC and campus recreation programs.
  • Supervises campus recreation staff, student employees and work study students.
  • Manages operating software including member management, point of sale, data reports and equipment check out.
  • Manages and makes recommendations to the director regarding the development and implementation of operating procedures, policies, learning outcomes and assessments used in the campus recreation programs.
  • Makes recommendations to the director for creation and implementation of the risk management and emergency action plans for the SWRC, including safety procedures during all on and off-campus activities.
  • Coordinates in planning large-scale projects, special events and collaborative efforts with internal and external partners.
  • Promotes and maintains a positive culture and learning environment within the SWRC, which contributes to NIC Mission fulfillment: student success and community engagement, educational excellence, stewardship and diversity.
  • Plans, coordinates, advertises, implements and supervises all Recreational Sports programs for NIC students and employees. Coordinates with various NIC departments to promote campus-wide wellness initiatives.
  • Schedules, promotes, and coordinates instruction for all Fitness programs for open recreation events in the SWRC.
  • Maintains all equipment associated with Recreational Sports, Fitness programs and SWRC operations which includes replacing, repairing, upgrading, and determining the need for additional equipment. Coordinates with external vendors as needed.
  • Develops, promotes and facilitates recreational camp programming during the summer months for community members.
  • Participates in campus meetings and committees that pertain to campus recreation.
  • Assists in the development and oversight of budgets for the Recreational Sports and Fitness programs and the student fees appropriated to the department for use as administrative and operational funds.
  • Maintains current operation manual including policies and procedures, emergency action plans, emergency contact information, forms and checklists, and equipment maintenance guidelines.
  • Compiles and evaluates program statistics and prepares related reports to include: usage, assessment and evaluation.
  • Abides by all college policies, rules, and regulations to include the Student Code of Conduct during any program on or off campus.
  • Maintains flexibility to work some evenings and weekends and travel as required by program activities or the director.
  • Keeps accurate and organized accounting of student funds when purchasing services or supplies for the program, which includes categorizing all program receipts and providing a written accounting of all program expenses to the Business Office, in accordance to college policy.
  • Maintains a positive, helpful, constructive attitude and work relationship with supervisor, college staff, students, and the community.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience : Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university in Physical Education, Recreation or a related field and two years of full-time equivalent related experience and/or training in recreational programming within an academic setting or similar environment required.

Required License and/or Certifications :
CPR/ First Aid/ AED certification or ability to obtain it within first six months of hire
Valid driver’s license.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• General knowledge of student development and recreational programming
• Understanding of risk management associated with wellness and recreation programs
• Effective skills in designing and delivering training and team building activities
• Demonstrated leadership, supervisory and problem-solving skills
• Ability to speak clearly and effectively to small and large groups
• Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Windows and Office, and ability to learn college specific databases
• Proficient writing skills
• Ability to think critically, operate independently and exercise good personal judgement
