Hagerstown Community College is pleased to announce that applications are currently being accepted for a Faculty, Chemistry position.
This is a full-time, 10-month faculty position for Chemistry, with a specific emphasis on organic chemistry. The primary teaching responsibilities will include teaching Organic Chemistry and Introductory Chemistry courses (including laboratories). Faculty in this position may be required to also teach courses in other Physical Science disciplines (such as Environmental Science, Geology, Earth/Space Science) as necessary to support the mission and needs of the division. This position will be located Mathematics and Science Division, and will fulfill all the responsibilities and expectations of a regular HCC faculty member. Additionally, this position will have the responsibility for leadership in curriculum development, Student Learning Outcomes Assessment (and related duties), and oversight/mentorship of adjuncts teaching related courses in the division.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
A. Faculty Duties and Responsibilities
1. Teaching: A faculty member is expected to prepare for and teach 15 credits per semester. Overload teaching is available for most Faculty and at times is strongly encouraged to meet student course demands.
2. Assessment: Faculty members are expected to assess learning
outcomes at the course, discipline, program and college levels.
3. Student Advisement: A faculty member should be able to advise
students on courses, programs and career/transfer objectives (with
support from Student Services).
4. Student Advocacy: A faculty member should be committed to
student learning/success. The Faculty member should be available to
help students as may be needed.
5. Curriculum Development: A faculty member must be current in his
or her field and transfer that knowledge to students in course
content and teaching delivery, as well to curriculum updates.
6. Recruitment and Marketing: A faculty member is a College
ambassador with special obligations to promote his/her discipline
or program to students and to the local community.
7. Shared Governance: A faculty member participates in all levels
of shared college governance, including departmental, divisional
and institutional-wide activities.
8. Professional Development: A faculty member maintains an approved
professional development plan that supports the college’s strategic
goals.
9. College Service: A faculty member is expected to serve the
College in activities addressing departmental responsibilities,
and/or community outreach, and/or student and campus life
activities.
10. Community Service: A faculty member serves the College in
voluntary community service activities that positively reflect the
College’s image and is not in conflict with the College’s strategic
goals or faculty responsibilities.
B. Essential Teaching Duties
In addition to the regular faculty responsibilities listed above,
the Chemistry faculty will:
1. Teach day-time, evening and/or online sections of Organic
Chemistry I and II (CHM 203/203L and CHM 204/CHM 204L) with
laboratory as well as sections of Introductory Chemistry (CHM
101/CHM 101L) with laboratory, and/or General Chemistry I and II
with laboratory (CHM 103/103L and CHM 104/104L). The faculty may
also teach courses like Environmental Science (ENV 201/201L
&/or ENV 202/202L), General Physical Science (PHS 104/104L) or
Earth & Space Science (PHS 111) or other courses as needed to
support the division.
2. Collaborate with Division faculty to develop
foundation/curriculum documents for classes and oversee assessment
of course learning outcomes at the program and/or course level(s)
as required.
3. Mentor/Supervise adjunct faculty. Duties related to this
function may include (but is not limited to) book orders,
dissemination of all relevant course materials/guidelines and
requirements; classroom observations, and data collection.
4. Collect common course assessment data for CHM 101 and CHM
203/CHM 204 classes and analyze according to division guidelines
and completion of the Student Learning Outcome Assessment (SLOA)
reports).
5. Collaborate with college faculty when needed to redesign
curriculum as necessary to meet the needs of programs and transfer
pathways requiring CHM courses to include instrumentation,
web-based and hybrid sections. Provide input needed for Unit
Planning (funding, equipment needs, curriculum changes etc.).
6. Work with Lab Coordinators and other Chemistry faculty to ensure
instrumentation and equipment is in proper working order and
incorporated into curriculum as needed.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
This position requires a minimum of a master’s degree in Chemistry
or a closely related field. Preference will be given to candidates
with a degree or coursework in Organic Chemistry and who can
demonstrate documentation of at least 2 years of successful
teaching experience at the community college/undergraduate level.
Experience with grant writing is very desirable.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Candidates should possess excellent written, oral and
organizational skills with the ability to communicate effectively
with students, faculty, staff, administration and community
partners. Candidates must possess foundational skills in the
laboratory and field settings and be able to convey these skills
and methodologies to students. The candidate should be able to use
standard laboratory equipment and sophisticated instrumentation
including but not limited to: Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Gas
Chromatography (GC), Infrared Spectroscopy (IR), High Pressure
Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and incorporate this into the
curriculum. Experience with faculty advising is preferred.
