Position Summary

A Visiting Instructor or Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics is a member of the teaching faculty in the School of Arts & Sciences at Fort Lewis College and will teach 24 credits (6-8 courses) across the undergraduate mathematics curriculum; they are expected to hold regular office hours, attend department meetings, and contribute to discussions regarding curriculum.  

Minimum Qualifications
  • For the Visiting Instructor position:  Master’s Degree in Mathematics or Mathematics Education with a minimum of 18 credits of mathematics courses at the graduate level. 
  • For the Visiting Assistant Professor position:  Doctorate in Mathematics or Mathematics Education. 
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching, with at least one year teaching at post-secondary level. 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills. 
  • Good organizational skills and the ability to complete tasks within strict timelines. 
  • Familiarity and/or willingness to work with Excel and Office 365 cloud functionalities. 
  • Familiarity and/or willingness to work with LaTeX, WeBWorK, Canvas, or other typesetting, online homework, and online course platforms. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships across academic units and with other offices on campus. 
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities 
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience or expertise in remedial or general education mathematics. 
  • Experience or expertise in early-college mathematics programs; relevant courses at FLC include pre-algebra through pre-calculus. 
  • Experience teaching underrepresented student populations. 
Major Responsibilities
  • The teaching load is 24 credits per academic year (6-8 courses). 
  • For the Visiting Instructor position:  Courses range across the first-year level mathematics curriculum, including pre-algebra through pre-calculus, general education mathematics, and statistics. 
  • For the Visiting Assistant Professor position:  Courses range across the undergraduate mathematics curriculum, including pre-algebra through the calculus sequence and possibly linear algebra or differential equations, general education mathematics, and statistics. 
  • Teaching includes preparing class and evaluation materials, delivering lectures, grading, and being available for student questions. 
  • Collaborate with colleagues in course curriculum, assessment, and other program-related activities. 
  • Aid with development of course materials. 
  • Work in drop-in tutor room. 
  • Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities 
  • Maintains knowledge and awareness of digital accessibility including the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 508. 
  • Produces and remediates digitally accessible materials in accordance with FLC standards. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 Compensation

The salary is $45,000 for the Visiting Instructor position and $50,000 for the Visiting Assistant Professor position, plus a comprehensive benefits package . Both positions are for the 9-Month academic year.
