Central Connecticut State University invites applications for an Associate Director – Student Wellness Services (medical). The Associate Director – Student Wellness Services is responsible for the daily operation of Student Wellness Services which provides students with medical care and treatment under the supervision of the Director or from up-to-date "Standing Orders." Responsibilities include supervision of the nursing staff and other Student Wellness Services employees, maintenance of proper medical records, maintenance and ordering of all equipment and supplies, coordinating health education services to students in Student Wellness Services and other administrative duties.

Position Responsibilities:

Participates and supervises nursing staff in providing assessment, care and treatment of medical, surgical, emotional or emergency conditions of students under the direct orders of the physician or "Standing Orders." When indicated, refers students to emergency room or medical/surgical consultants.

Supervises and directs nursing and clerical staffs in daily operations of the Student Wellness Services. Administers work schedules for staff nurses assuring adequate shift coverage for the Department. Prepares and monitors Student Wellness Services staff time sheet for the Director and validates in Director's absence. Evaluates and submits annual nursing staff performance evaluations to the Director. Interviews and recommends potential nursing staff for employment to the Director.

Supervises work-study students employed in Student Wellness Services. Allocates duties and approves and certifies work-study students' time sheets and work schedules. Interviews and hires work-study students for Student Wellness Services. Provides careful orientation before the students commence their duties.

Organizes, prepares, and instructs or supervises instruction of on-campus courses in health education and other appropriate topics for students and staff as assigned. Orders and organizes distribution of educational materials for students' wellness awareness and health education.

Supervises the maintenance, security, and confidentiality of proper medical and mental health records on all persons utilizing Student Wellness Services.

Maintains inventory, researches prices and orders medication, supplies and equipment requested by the Director.

Maintains and submits to the Director a continual update of Student Wellness Services expenditures for medications, supplies and equipment. Provides input into budgetary preparation.

Reviews and revises Student Wellness Services Procedure Manual with Director.

Administers and implements the Health Record Compliance procedure with appropriate University departments and follows up on the program.

Researches and solves insurance claim problems for students and parents and submits regular reports of insurance problems status to the Director as required.

Prepares and submits weekly data and records on statistics and Health Service utilization, Respiratory Survey to Connecticut State Department of Health, and data to community Public Health Department.

Prepares physical condition verification documents for processing, physical education waivers, parking permits for individuals with disabilities, medical withdrawals and absences from classes for medical reasons when authorized by the Director or in the Director's absence as required.

Participates in the development of Long-Range Planning Goals, Annual Report and policy development.

As a member of administrative faculty, attends faculty meetings; administrative representative at the Division of Student Affairs meetings in the Director’s absence, or if requested to attend.

Performs other duties and responsibilities related to those enumerated above which do not alter the basic level of responsibility of the position.

Required Qualifications:
  • B.S.N. plus four years of nursing experience demonstrating ability to relate effectively to students and staff and to supervise the other members of a health care team.
  • Current license to practice professional nursing in Connecticut.
  • Master's degree preferred or Nurse Practitioner in appropriate specialty.
  • Experience with young adults desirable.
  • Candidates lacking the B.S.N. may be considered in the case of appropriate experience.

The Community: Located nine miles southwest of Hartford, New Britain is a city of approximately 72,000. Part of the Greater Hartford area of 1.2 million residents, New Britain is centrally located in the state and is within easy reach of much of Connecticut and several metropolitan areas. Nicknamed “the Hardware City” for its rich industrial heritage, it is home to Stanley Black & Decker. Important cultural institutions include the New Britain Museum of American Art and Walnut Hill Park, designed by Fredrick Law Olmstead. New Britain’s population is characterized by a high degree of racial and ethnic diversity. Currently, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates 70% of the population as White, 13% as Black or African American, 3% as Asian, and 0.2% as American Indian or Alaska Native. Currently 4.6% of New Britain’s population identify themselves in more than one racial category and 43% of New Britain’s population identify themselves as Hispanic or Latino. Fifty percent (50%) speak a language other than English in the home and 19% were born internationally. Significant portions of its population come from Puerto Rico and Poland or consider themselves to be from the African-American, Italian, or Irish ethnic backgrounds. In addition to all that greater Hartford provides, New Britain is 40 minutes from Springfield, Massachusetts two hours from Boston, and two hours from New York City. It is also part of the Hartford-Springfield “Knowledge Corridor” and, therefore, within easy driving distance of a host of private and public institutions of higher education and many cultural opportunities.

The Associate Director – Student Wellness Services (medical) is compensated at the Administrator 4 salary level in accordance with the State University Organization of Administrative Faculty (SUOAF) Collective Bargaining Union Agreement.
