About the Position:

This new position has been created to continue the growth of enrollment among and expansion of support for two cohorts of Honors College students: transfer students and continuing students who enter after their first years at Mason. In collaboration with the Office of Admissions and the Honors College’s Assistant Dean and Director of Academic Advising, the Transfer Coordinator will develop, coordinate, and implement strategies and programs for (a) recruiting students in these populations, (b) facilitating their transition into the Honors College community, and (c ) fostering their academic success.

 

Responsibilities:

Recruitment & Outreach

In collaboration with the Office of Admissions, recruit and enroll new transfer students. This will include continuing the strategic development of our partnerships with Virginia Community Colleges and the ADVANCE program;

Lead the College’s recruitment of continuing Mason students, including our outreach to qualified candidates as well as advisors and faculty; review of applications; and invitation of new candidates; and

Hold regular information sessions for potential applicants and admitted students in both cohorts.

 

Support for Student Transition & Academic Success

  • Develop individualized transition plans for each new student in these cohorts, including credit evaluations and preliminary academic advising;
  • Collaborate with the Office of the Registrar to develop systems that ensure prior coursework is appropriately substituted for Honors College requirements;
  • In collaboration with the College’s Director of Academic Advising, Associate Director of Student Success & Retention, and faculty, develop and implement strategies to support the academic success and retention of these specific cohorts; and
  • Foster transition into and engagement in the Honors College’s community by leading at least one community event each semester.

 

General Duties of Honors College Faculty and Staff

  • Serve as an Honors College academic advisor for students in a defined set of majors (to be identified upon hire);
  • Serve as a member of relevant Honors College committees;
  • Support the Honors College’s mission and participate in the College’s community;
  • Demonstrate respect for a diversity of opinions and perspectives;
  • Work with the staff of the Honors College to develop the quality and reputation of all services and programs under its auspices; and
  • Attend Honors College staff and committee meetings & participate in staff development.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated familiarity with each of the following areas, with evidence of considerable experience (at least three years) in at least one: admissions and recruitment, transfer student support, and/or academic advising;
  • Experience providing effective support for student academic success and transitions;
  • Evidence of effective interpersonal, written, and oral communication;
  • Evidence of ability to work independently, as well as in collaboration with multiple stakeholders;
  • Demonstrated commitment to Mason’s values, including commitments to student success, access, equity, and inclusive and anti-racist practices; and
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent training and work experience.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with the types of platforms and software systems that are commonly used in higher education (examples include Banner, TargetX, Navigate, Stellic, and similar systems);
  • Experience supporting academic success and transition of students in Honors colleges and programs;
  • Experience supporting academic success and transition of transfer students and/or adult learners; and
  • Graduate degree or combination of training and work experience at a level that equates to an advanced degree.
