Work Conditions: Worker is subject to both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions. Worker is exposed to dust, plant sprays, loud machinery and solvents. May be required to wear hearing protection and/or respiratory protection and/or other personal protective equipment daily. Work is moderately heavy in nature and involves exerting up to 75 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds frequently. Work also involves walking, standing, lifting, grasping, stooping, kneeling, pushing, pulling, driving equipment and being outdoors in all types of weather conditions. This position requires occasional weekend and after-hours work, and availability 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Duties of Position: Coordinates, directs and supervises the activity of the Roads and Grounds Department including, but not limited to design, planting, care and maintenance of lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers, ponds, athletic fields, snow removal and roads throughout the College and satellite campus. This position is responsible for the overall grounds maintenance of the campus, supervision of Roads and Grounds section employees and management of all contract administrative functions related to the Roads and Grounds section including vehicle maintenance. In addition, may serve as project manager for horizontal construction and maintenance projects to include athletics; parking; landscaping and hardscape.

Establishes work procedures and standards and assigns and schedules work.

Supervises maintenance of College's outdoor facilities including vegetation control, maintenance of access roads and athletic fields, and turf maintenance which includes mowing, fertilization, herbicide applications, renovation and installation.

Designs, plants and maintains flowers and plants throughout the College. Manages the Greenhouse facility and the growing of plants in the Greenhouse facility for campus use.

Provides leadership in “green” approach to the application of fertilizers and pesticides.

Responsible for snow removal and emergency/disaster response throughout the College. Must be on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to coordinate and supervise snow removal operations.

Establishes work procedures and standards and assigns and schedules work for the Roads and Grounds Department and the Equipment Mechanic. Trains employees on the use of the equipment as well as on safety standards and policies.

Reviews incoming work orders, may meet with originator to determine materials needed and adds additional instructions as necessary.

Inspects completed work to ensure conformance to standards.

Confers with, makes recommendations to, and prepares cost estimates for projects and prepares reports for Executive Director of Facilities Management regarding costs of jobs in addition to time and materials required.

Takes measures to improve production, equipment performance and quality of work produced.

Maintains time records such as attendance and overtime.

Interprets College and departmental policy to staff and enforces work and safety regulations.

Investigates all accidents and injuries of staff and submits reports with finding to Executive Director of Facilities Management and Chief Human Resources Officer.

Works with supervision to develop and maintain an inspection program to identify and correct unsafe conditions for the welfare of students, employees and visitors.

Suggests changes in working conditions, department procedures and equipment usage to increase efficiency.

Recommends personnel actions such as hiring, promotion, transfer, disciplinary action and discharge.

Serves as first step in grievance procedures.

Responsible for inventory control of tools and equipment. Initiates requisitions for supplies and equipment.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Educational Requirements: Associate’s degree or equivalent combination of formal education and experience in horticulture, landscape architecture or related field.

Experience Requirements: Five years supervising experience in ground/park maintenance. Proven ability to implement and initiate necessary plans to ensure proper maintenance of grounds

Skills/Licensing: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Project Management Software
  • Valid Illinois Driver’s License at time of hire and maintained through employment
  • Must be able to obtain an Illinois Pesticide Applicator License for turf within one year of hire.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain an Illinois CDL with air brakes within one year of hire.
  • Must be able to complete certification in project management within one year of hire
