Schedule Information: This is a one-year non-tenure track appointment. Faculty may be expected to teach the following courses, in sequence, as part of the core coursework for the Associate of Fine Arts degree in music or Associate of Arts/Associate of Science general education courses. These courses are spread over one academic years (two semesters):

MUS 101 Fundamentals of Music Theory

MUS 103 Music Appreciation

MUS 104 Introduction to American Music

MUS 106 Introduction to Jazz

MUS 145 Jazz Ensemble

MUS 145 Jazz Lab Band

MUS 145 Vocal Jazz Ensemble

Weeks per fiscal year: Faculty are covered under a 9-month contract period (August thru May)

Position Description and Duties: The Department of Music at Harper College, a two-year institution located 20 miles northwest of Chicago, seeks a faculty member for a full-time, one-year non-tenure track position. Candidates should possess expertise in areas such as general education music classes, instrumental/vocal ensembles, curriculum development (including writing syllabi), and developing/teaching music classes using traditional and alternative delivery methods.

The successful candidate will have a 4/4 load consisting chiefly of music classes and instrumental/choral ensembles. In addition to teaching 15 contact hours per semester, a full-time music faculty member serves on departmental, divisional, and institutional committees; holds 10 office hours per week; and pursues professional development opportunities related to discipline and pedagogy.

Throughout its more than fifty-year history, the Department of Music at Harper College has maintained a distinguished tradition of excellence in the cultural life of Chicago's Northwest suburbs. With a faculty of more than fifty artists and scholars brought together from institutions from around the world, every facet of our program is guided by recognized expertise. Members of the performance faculty in the Department of Music maintain active careers ranging from appearances with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Grant Park Orchestra, Chicago Philharmonic, Elgin Symphony Orchestra, and many others, to a wide variety of professional chamber ensembles and solo appearances.

Complementing a high level of excellence in performance, the Department of Music maintains a similar tradition of academic excellence in the classroom. It is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music with recognized transfer programs in music. The combination of a strong curriculum and a thoroughly dedicated faculty provides students with the constant guidance of experienced professionals and the tools for future success.

Educational Requirements: Master’s degree in music or music education.

Experience Requirements: Preference will be given to applicants who have previous experience teaching instrumental/vocal music at the public school and/or college/university level.
