Position Information

This is a full-time management (MPP) position. MPP employees serve at the pleasure of the campus President. MPPs do not serve a probationary period and never receive permanent status.

This position is a "designated position" in the California State University's Conflict of Interest Code. The successful candidate accepting this position is required to file Conflict of Interest forms subject to the regulations of the Fair Political Practices Commission.

Special Working Conditions: Monday-Friday 8-5, other hours as required

Major Duties

Under the general direction of the Dean of the College of Education, the Associate Dean works closely with the Dean to provide overall leadership and coordination for academic and administrative services within the College. The Associate Dean will ground their work in the guiding principles of the College: justice, equity, and critical consciousness. They will conduct their work in three primary areas: student experience and sustainability (student petitions, scholarships, policies); college and university functions (accreditation, curriculum, enrollment, and facilities); and staff and faculty support (staff supervision and professional development, faculty research, teaching and service support, the evaluation of lecturers). The Associate Dean will also serve on various campus and community committees, assume the leadership role in the absence of the Dean, and perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Education: An earned doctorate from an accredited institution of higher education in one of the disciplines represented in the College

Required Experience: Eight (8) years of professionally related experience in higher education. Three (3) years of academic administration experience at the department chair or higher level with successful experience in coordinating, chairing or administering academic program(s).

Preferred Qualifications:

Five years of advanced faculty or administrative leadership experience
  • Knowledge of/experience with state accreditation processes for initial and advanced credentials;
  • A record of successful grant writing and successful grant and external funding management;
  • A demonstrated commitment to leadership-for-social-justice (demonstrated in research and/or praxis)
  • Experience with enrollment management and course scheduling;
  • Experience with equity-oriented curriculum development;
  • Experience in a faculty collective bargaining context and/or in shared governance contexts;
  • Knowledge of/experience with contracts for the various Collective Bargaining Units that represent staff;
  • Experience using software to schedule classes, track graduation rates, and display data (i.e., Peoplesoft, Tableau);
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) or (Korean/English) or Multilingual (Spanish, Korean, English)

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated equity-minded, student-oriented decision-making and familiarity with policies and procedures governing student academic life;
  • Record of advising and mentoring students, especially first generation, minoritized students in minority-serving institutions (i.e., HSIs, HBCUs, AANAPISIs, TCUs);
  • A sustained history and evidence of supporting a highly diverse, first-generation student population.
  • Demonstrated experience with program assessment and evaluation;
  • Demonstrated experience cultivating and sustaining school-community partnerships;
  • Demonstrated leadership in academic planning, evaluation, and/or curriculum design;
  • Demonstrated experience in transparent policymaking and policy implementation in shared governance contexts;
  • Demonstrated experience supervising staff in inclusive, diverse environments;
  • Demonstrated experience providing professional growth and/or professional development opportunities for staff;
  • Demonstrated experience supporting faculty in and through evaluation cycles;
  • Experience leading in diverse, urban P-16 educational contexts;
  • Strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Demonstrated consultative decision-making and problem-solving skills;
  • Verifiable background and qualifications (record of teaching, research, and service) for a faculty appointment at the rank of Professor in one of the divisions/programs of the College

    Certification: Valid Drivers License

    Responsibilities

    40% - Internal College and University Duties:

    Lead accreditation and Unit Assessment in the College: Lead accreditation efforts in the College. Liaise with the Commission on Teacher Credentialing and other credentialing bodies as needed. Work collaboratively with the Evaluation Coordinator, COE Evaluation Center, and Department Chairs and Program Coordinators to support evaluation and program review efforts.

    Enrollment management:

    Review course offerings and the schedule of classes to ensure that student needs are met, classes are filled, and budgeting and enrollment are in sync. Support Department Chairs and Program Coordinators in managing applications, admissions, and enrollment management in the diverse programs in the COE.

    Facilities:

    Supervise staff who manage College facilities in accordance with University and College policies, procedures, and regulations to ensure optimal space utilization for instruction and research as well as a physical work environment. Advise and consult with departments and programs on facilities issues and provides the Dean with relevant facilities information.

    Represent the Dean and College:

    Serve as ex-officio member on College and University Committees. Represent the College in meetings with departments such as Academic Affairs, Faculty Affairs, and Facilities Planning, as directed by the Dean. Represent the Dean on various committees and at University/College functions as requested by the Dean.

    35% - Student Experience and Sustainability

    Advise the Dean on all matters related to students: Engage in equitable, responsive, and just student success practices. Conduct patient and judicious reviews and evaluations of student petitions, change of grade requests, student issues, and other matters that require the Dean's approval. Participate in the formulation and implementation of vision-driven policies in this area. Act as the College's liaison on a variety of committees that influence student academic policies or that develop or enhance student support services. Manage the review and provision of competitive scholarships in the College.

    Manage curriculum processes:

    Support curriculum processes in accordance with University and College policies and the priorities of the Dean, with a focus on creating equitable, responsive and just learning experiences for all learners, especially those from minoritized groups within our college and in our local schools. Provide leadership in conceptualizing, planning, and implementing academic and student support programs that improve academic performance and/or persistence to degree.

    20% - Staff and Faculty Support

    Staff supervision:

    Working from an equity lens, supervise staff in the College. Create and support professional development for staff, hold regular staff meetings, conduct annual evaluations.

    Assist the Dean in faculty recruitment, retention and evaluation efforts: Provide communication linkage with departments and programs on personnel and academic issues including RTP and lecturer evaluations. Work with the Dean to support faculty's holistic development across the lifespan as they engage in rigorous and responsive research, make innovations in teaching and learning, and contribute to their departments, the College, the university, and the community.

    5% - Other duties as assigned:

    The Associate Dean performs other duties related to the general administration of the College as assigned by the Dean of the College of Education.
