About the Position:
Cal State Fullerton's College of the Arts is distinguished by its fully-accredited Department of Visual Arts. Fine arts, new media, and design programs provide quality learning to 1,600 undergraduate and graduate students within state-of-the-art studios, classrooms, computer and design labs, and galleries. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as the Accompanist II. The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

The faculty, staff, and administration in the Department of Theatre & Dance at California State University, Fullerton are fully committed to the health and well-being of every student in our program, as well as to the quality and outcomes of our instruction and curriculum. The Accompanist supports modern dance and ballet technique classes. Composes and improvises music for dance classes and/or composition classes. Transcribes from recordings and may assemble and maintain a music library. Other duties as assigned.


Essential Qualifications:
Completion of special training or coursework that would facilitate composing and improvising music and/or coaching and accompanying. Experience which has led to a thorough familiarity with accompanying choral groups, soloists, or interpretive dances, as well as experience coaching performing artists. Knowledge of the fundamentals of harmony, as well as skill in playing one or more musical instruments as an accompanist. Ability to select appropriate dance music. Ability to compose or improvise music, and coach performing artists. Ability to transcribe music from recordings.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.


Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university is preferred. Preference will be given to those with extensive performance and accompanying experience. Experience in coaching soloists and ensemble groups. Excellent piano skills as well as skill in playing one or more musical instruments as an accompanist. Ability to function as a music resource person for faculty and student choreographer.
