Minimum Qualifications

• Master's degree in Leadership Studies, Student Affairs, Higher Education or a related area
• 5 years of full-time professional experience in higher education
• Demonstrable experience with and knowledge of current best practices in leadership education and programming on a college campus required.
• Demonstrated experience with engagement and advising of students in a co-curricular university setting
• Demonstrated experience as a classroom instructor
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  
  
• Experience with supervising and developing graduate-level and/or full-time staff members to accomplish personal and organizational goals.

Division of Student Affairs
The Division of Student Affairs at Appalachian State University directs its educational efforts at fostering the intellect and character of students by integrating in-class and co-curricular experiences. To accomplish this, the University provides a broad range of educational experiences through programs and activities that complement and support the academic experience in the classroom. Although the primary focus of these activities is to advance student learning, they also provide needed services, support, and recreational opportunities to help students meet the challenges of college and to enhance the quality of student life. The Division of Student Affairs has been organized to achieve these aspects of the University's mission. Student life is the focus of the programs and activities of the Division.

Community-Engaged Leadership is structured as a part of the Division of Student Affairs. The Mission of Community-Engaged Leadership is to engage students in academic, experiential, and community-oriented programs that enhance their capacity to serve and lead in socially-responsible ways for the benefit of their local and global communities. Our team recognizes that the development of the whole student is achieved through in-class learning and out-of-class experiences provided through programs designed to enhance cultural, intellectual, leadership, personal, and professional development. When afforded these opportunities for engagement and learning, students will graduate from the institution with a better understanding of themselves, their peers, and their responsibilities as part of a larger community.

Appalachian State University is seeking an energetic and visionary leader to serve as Associate Director within the Department of Community-Engaged Leadership. This role serves both as a full-time, professional staff and as adjunct faculty within the Reich College of Education. The Associate Director provides oversight to the leadership education and leadership programming efforts for the office, both directly and indirectly through the supervision of two full-time staff. The Associate Director will direct the Leadership Studies Minor and accompanying experiential opportunities through data-informed practice along with collaborative strategic planning. This person will understand today's college students, create space for students to engage in meaningful and purposeful dialogue, provide a developmental and educational context for campus programming and represent the office to external constituencies and stakeholders.

Duties and Responsibilities Include:

• Direction and oversight of relevant curricular and co-curricular initiatives
• Serve as Director of the academic Leadership Studies Minor through the Reich College of Education
• Serve as co-director of Plemmons Leadership Scholars, a 4-year community and leadership based scholarship program
• Supervise two Assistant Directors who are, in turn, responsible for oversight of co-curricular leadership experiences such as workshops, conferences, extended orientation, and a living-learning community
• Develop and nurture relationships with adjunct instructors and campus partners
• Teach 2 classes per semester in the Leadership Studies Minor
• Contribute to CEL department initiatives and operations including weekly meetings, annual reports, assessment, retreats, and award nominations.
• Select, train, and supervise one Graduate Assistant; supervise graduate student Teaching Assistants and internships as needed
• Work with the department's director on the management of budget
• Ensure proper safety and liability processes involved in all programs and events
• Utilize research, theories, models, and standards in the leadership field to design robust and inclusive curriculum for curricular and co-curricular experiences
• Integrate diverse scholarship and critical pedagogy into leadership education efforts

Suggested Salary Range $63,000-$67,000 Physical Demands of Position
