Reporting to the Director of Counseling Services, performs
individual, couples, group, and crisis intervention counseling to
students experiencing social, emotional, and vocational
difficulties. Provides assessments/testing as appropriate for
license and makes appropriate referrals for services.
Collaborates with faculty, staff, and students to offer
psychoeducational outreach services. Work is performed under
general supervision of the Director of Counseling Services with the
expectation that the College Counselor will perform independently
based on license and training. May supervise practicum students
and/or interns, as appropriate.
Qualifications: Master’s Degree in Counseling or a related
field of study required. Must hold a license to practice
mental health care in Virginia, or be license-eligible with the
ability to be fully licensed in Virginia within 12 months of the
start of employment. 1 – 3 years of previous experience in a
college setting and 1 – 3 years of previous experience in
addiction/substance counseling preferred. Knowledge of modern
counseling practices and methods as well as adherence to existing
professional ethical standards. Ability to form and maintain
effective counseling relationships with clients, monitor client
movement in the therapy process, and terminate the relationship in
appropriate ways. Ability to plan, implement, evaluate, and
report activities. Effectively communicate orally, both in
person and by telephone. Plan, implement, and evaluate
outreach programs and workshops. Effectively
communicate in writing and prepare written documents.
Maintain a consistent and dependable work schedule. Respond
to emergency situations in a timely manner. Ability to use a
personal computer and other office equipment. Occasional
travel.
