Position Summary

The Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students oversees a large portfolio of departments and programs related to student engagement and success, affinity, equity and inclusion. The AVP/Dean of Students is one of four AVP positions in the Division, and is responsible for developing and maintaining programs that support the mission and goals of California State University, Sacramento. These include the Graduation Initiative (GI), Anchor Initiative, Antiracism Initiative, Public (student) Safety, and Philanthropy.

The programs and services overseen by the AVP/DOS are aimed at helping students feel welcome and engaged on-campus, receive the support and services they need to succeed and graduate in a timely manner. In addition, a primary focus of the work is to decrease the opportunity gap for under-represented minority (URM), low income and first-generation students. Also, programs through the Career Center and Student Organizations and Leadership help students gain co-curricular experience and internships applicable to their studies and future careers.

It is important to note that several affinity and equity centers reside in this area which are critical to our students' success and campus diversity, inclusion and equity work.

FLSA: Exempt

CSU Classification Salary Range: $ 6,250.00 - $ 18,750.00 per month

Hiring Range: $ 9,100 - $ 18,750 per month commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training

Pay Plan: 12 months

Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 8am-5pm. Hours often vary depending on need.

The Dean of Students Office serves as a central resource for both students requiring support as well as anyone concerned about a student who may be struggling with a crisis, conflict, or a need for greater connection with community life. Required Qualifications
  • Master's degree from an accredited institution
  • Progressively responsible professional experience managing multiple Academic or Student Affairs departments/programs, or multiple non-university departments comparable in nature.
  • Fiscal experience overseeing and shaping multiple budgets, working with grant funded programs, and building or reducing budgets while maintaining high quality services to students (or constituents)
  • Demonstrated success in hiring, supervising, and evaluating management-level staff; demonstrated success in developing staff and managers to expand their responsibilities and progress in their careers.
  • Experience in policy review and revision in a shared governance environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to Diversity and Inclusive Excellence work with substantial experience working in a very diverse environment; ability to recognize inequity and create collaborative strategies to address equity and affinity issues in a complex organization
  • Excellent communication skills: Including writing, reviewing and editing for effective content and political nuance; and, demonstrated ability to speak to small and large groups and to successfully address individual needs of students (and families), staff, faculty, administration and community partners

  • Willingness to enforce aforementioned policies and protocols using empathetic leadership, strong communication skills and a commitment to excellence
  • Experience in program review, assessment, accreditation, and/or evaluation
  • Experience working with student governance groups and student media
