Summary/Objective

The Prospect Research Analyst liaises with DAR’s front-line fundraising teams to generate prospect leads for the development division, as well as best-in-class bespoke prospect research and analysis to support American University’s fundraising units in alignment with department, unit, and university priorities.

Essential Functions
  1. Proactive prospect research and lead generation for fundraising units. Identification of prospect leads for schools and university programs, with a primary focus on major and principal gift prospects; referrals to development officers as appropriate. Work with Prospect Development colleagues to execute prospecting projects and initiatives in alignment with university funding priorities and unit portfolio needs.
  2. Wealth and capacity assessment. In-depth research of prospects to generate capacity ratings to inform strategy and analysis at individual and aggregate levels; deepen the university’s understanding of a prospect’s philanthropic affinity and propensity; and enrich cultivation efforts.
  3. Special projects and other duties as assigned. Compile biographic detail on key prospects for university leadership briefing materials. Serve as subject matter expert in database optimization projects. Monitor the accuracy of biographic, demographic, and contact information detail in the system of record and partner with Advancement Operations colleagues in maintaining current and accurate donor records.

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Experience with qualitative and/or quantitative research (e.g. market research, academic research, genealogy research) highly desirable.
  • Prior experience in a higher education and/or major gift fundraising environment highly desirable.
  • Experience using a development database or CRM (Salesforce, Blackbaud CRM, Raiser’s Edge, Ellucian CRM Advance) highly desirable.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products
  • Aptitude for learning new technologies and electronic resources
