The Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law seeks to hire an Assistant Dean of Academic and Bar Success (ABS).

 

Essential functions of the position include:

 

  • Teach Bar Exam Substance, Strategies, and Tactics (BESST) course (face-to-face or online) each semester in multiple sections as appropriate.
  • Provide coaching and individual support for students/graduates during bar preparation leading up to the exam.
  • Participate in and develop academic support programming for 1L Orientation.
  • Design, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive skills development workshop series for first-year students focusing on academic success skills such as notetaking, outlining, exam strategies, and general study techniques.
  • Design, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive workshop series for all law students on topics related to the bar, including early considerations for first and second-year students, preparing for the UBE, overview of the application process/informational session with the Indiana Board of Law Examiners, and bar skills workshops on the MPRE, MPT, MEE, and MBE.
  • Supervise the Assistant Director of Academic Support and Program Coordinator.
  • Develop and implement academic success initiatives that may include working individually or in groups with students who are on academic probation or at academic risk to help them develop habits and methods to improve their academic performance.
  • Supervise the teaching of the Legal Analysis course each semester in multiple sections as appropriate.
  • Collect and organize data for long-term assessment of: (a) student participation in ABS programming and course offerings, (b) individual student academic and bar exam performance, and (c) McKinney School of Law retention and bar passage rates.
  • Oversee the ABS program budget.

Qualified candidates must have a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited U.S. college or university and successful passage of a bar exam in a U.S. jurisdiction. An active license is not necessary.

 

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position include familiarity with the UBE, excellent communication skills, and legal writing and editing skills; proven teaching, interpersonal, and counseling skills including class preparation, classroom teaching, and working with individual students; demonstrated organizational and leadership skills; ability to work with a diverse student body and work collaboratively with faculty and staff; willingness to work with students with a range of disabilities; commitment to developing inclusive teaching practices that engage students from diverse backgrounds; adept at developing, marketing, and delivering a bar preparation program; proficient in compiling an analyzing data for statistical analysis; and three or more years of post-law school experience or higher education experience. Experience teaching in and managing a law school academic support program is preferred. 

 

Compensation for this position will be up to $80,000, not inclusive of benefits.
