Job Description

The Instructional Specialist will report to the Director of Instructional Effectiveness and assist faculty in transforming delivery of courses to include evidence-based teaching strategies like active learning and formative feedback. They will share pedagogical best practices with FSE instructors and encourage implementation of innovative instructional practices with a primary focus on personalized and active learning strategies in hybrid and face to face modalities. They will provide one-on-one consultation with faculty seeking assistance with classroom instruction and assessment of student learning. They will also work collaboratively to develop inclusive and effective professional learning including highly effective instructional guides, instructional technology training, ‘just-in-time’ learning resources, tutorials and quick-reference guides, and self-paced training.

Essential Duties

  • Collaborates with faculty in transforming delivery of courses to include evidence-based teaching strategies like active learning and formative feedback and provide guidance on instructional methods primarily in hybrid, blended, and face to face modalities
  • Collaboratively develops guidelines/standards for hybrid, personalized courses with active learning component
  • Provides guidance to individual faculty in the design and development of engaging, interactive and instructionally sound materials that address various learning styles and are accessible to all students
  • Lead, promote, and encourage implementation of innovative instructional practices, providing timely one-on-one consultation for faculty seeking assistance with classroom design and delivery, assessment of student learning, flipped course design, and innovative instructional techniques and technology
  • Create highly effective instructional guides, instructional technology training, ‘just-in-time’ learning resources, tutorials and quick-reference guides, self-paced trainings, recommended readings lists, and additional website content
  • Work collaboratively with team members and instructors to develop inclusive and effective professional learning opportunities that enhance quality of instruction in all modalities and include experiences aligned with faculty career progression (including new, tenure-track, teaching track, IOR, and FA)
  • Work collaboratively with faculty instructional leads on classroom observations and instructional coaching to ensure seamless instructor support and guidance
  • Identify and celebrate quality instruction within the FSE community through recognition, nomination, and award processes and platforms
  • Collaborate with various stakeholders, including colleagues from the FSE Learning and Teaching Hub and colleagues throughout ASU, to support new initiatives as needed
  • Champion the scholarship of teaching and learning by staying abreast of current trends in STEM education, educational research, educational technology and curriculum, teaching practices, faculty policies, and research-based practices and ensuring alignment between professional learning initiatives and school/college/Hub goals and mission
  • Lead, promote, and encourage the implementation of innovative instructional technology to enhance delivery

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field. Five (5) years of providing learning/instructional design and/or technology development services. Or, any equivalent combination of experience or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working with faculty in the STEM fields
  • Classroom teaching experience, preferably in the STEM fields
  • Experience integrating instructional technologies in a ground or hybrid instructional modality
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills (e.g., with students, faculty, etc.) with the ability to develop trusting mentoring relationships
  • Experience conducting classroom observations in a ground or hybrid instructional modality
  • Well-developed ability to provide feedback on instructional design and delivery for all levels of faculty
  • Strong knowledge of instructional best practices in Engineering Education and flipped course design
  • Experience leading professional development trainings and webinars
  • Strong written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Skilled in creating and organizing resources and establishing priorities
  • Willingness to learn and support instructional technology applications
  • Master’s degree in Education or related fields
  • 4 or more years guiding or advising instructors in a higher education institution

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse 75 percent; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work 10 percent.
  • Ability to clearly communicate verbally, read, write, see and hear to perform essential functions.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds 15 percent.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
