Job Description:

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

Academic Success Coordinator for Peer-Led Instruction is a member of the Academic Success Team in the Center for Academic Success and Achievement (CASA). Primary duties include hiring, training and providing ongoing supervision to Supplement Instruction Leaders, Peer Discussion Leaders, and students who provide peer instruction and tutoring across all academic disciplines with particular emphasis on STEM. The Coordinator will work closely with faculty in related departments and provide continual evaluation and assessment of Peer-Led Instruction and Supplemental Instruction as a specific form of tutoring. As a member of the Center for Academic Success and Achievement team, the Coordinator will participate in new initiatives aimed at retention, including overseeing the GenerationOne affinity group for first-generation students, faculty and staff. Retention activities include reviewing and responding to faculty concerns raised through Starfish and participation in recruitment events.

EXAMPLES OF SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

PEER LED INSTRUCTION

  • Solicit nominations from faculty of potential SI Leaders, Peer Discussion Leaders, and subject tutors;
  • Recruit, interview and select students for all peer-led instruction efforts;
  • Conduct ongoing training for all peer-led instruction leaders;
  • Offer ongoing evaluation, support, and feedback to Peer-Led Instruction Leaders through individual and group meetings;
  • Gather and disseminate resources for leaders;
  • Work with faculty, administrators and other Peer-Led Instruction leaders to solve problems that may arise;
  • Gather and analyze data to determine effectiveness of Peer-Led Instruction;
  • Provide administrative support for Peer-Led Instruction, including but not limited to identifying space for sessions, managing contracts for Leaders, and monitoring time and attendance;
  • Plan and execute special events associated with Peer-Led Instruction, including but not limited to a welcome reception for new STEM majors during fall orientation;
  • Contribute to other academic support initiatives aimed at student success and retention, with special emphasis on STEM majors; and
  • Collaborate with other academic support personnel in CASA regarding student hires and resource allocation.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT

  • Triage new and current students who come for support to determine immediacy of need; address the needs or refer as appropriate;
  • Represent CASA during new student and parent orientation;
  • Support First-Year Programs, including Foundations Seminar;
  • Provide coverage when necessary for Disability/Access Services, particularly with proctoring of exams; and
  • Actively participate as a member of the CASA academic support team and collaborate with other staff on projects and/or initiatives (probation programming, Black and Gold Beginnings programming, student academic leader trainings, etc.)

CAMPUS ENGAGEMENT

  • Serve on University-wide committees, especially those aimed at student success;
  • Oversee GenerationOne, the University's affinity group for first-generation college students, faculty and staff;
  • Support efforts for STEM Scholars program, including mentoring initiatives for such;
  • Seek or support grant applications and, upon awarding of such grants, fulfill requirements for such

RETENTION INITIATIVES AND COACHING

  • Monitor and respond to Starfish flags for STEM majors throughout the semester; 500-600 per semester
  • Conduct extensive student outreach following Early Academic Alert and Midterm Grade surveys via email, phone call and/ or one-on-one meetings depending on level of concern.
  • Meet with students for academic coaching throughout the semester.
  • Support various retention initiatives including phone outreach to unregistered students, registration help for late admits and late registration.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Office setting with occasional weekends required for accepted student receptions and new student orientation.

Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree required,
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to practice professionalism and confidentiality regarding student incidents, records
  • Proficiency with various forms of technology, including Microsoft Excel and Teams; propensity to master use of Canvas and Starfish tools.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's Degree preferred in higher education or student personnel
Experience in higher education setting


Additional Information:

This is a full-time, exempt, benefits-eligible position in the Association of Professional Administrators (APA) bargaining unit with a title of Staff Associate. The salary range is $50,000-$53,000.
