UW Information Technology (UW-IT) is the central IT organization for the University of Washington, providing critical technology support to all three campuses, UW medical centers and global research operations. UW-IT collaborates with University partners to advance teaching, learning, innovation and discovery at the UW.  https://www.washington.edu/uwit/

UW-IT seeks a visionary, strategic, and inspiring leader to become the Associate Vice President for Operations (AVP) Req#206406.

The AVP is a direct report to the Vice President for UW Information Technology and Chief Information Officer (VP/CIO). The AVP will provide strategic leadership to the organization in partnership with the Division Heads for Academic Services; Customer Service & Support; Information Management; IT Infrastructure; Office of the Chief Information Security Officer; and Research Computing and Strategy. The AVP builds, sustains, encourages, and supports productive relationships with and among both unit and University-wide colleagues to ensure UW-IT resources are optimized and advance the University’s mission.

The AVP will be responsible for leading and managing UW-IT’s core administrative support functions including Communications; Compliance Assurance and Major Procurements; Facilities Management; Financial Management - budgeting, accounting, financial reporting and analysis; Human Resources; Organizational Development; and Strategic Initiatives and Special Projects, which includes IT governance. The AVP is charged with aligning administrative support functions, policies, and procedures, with the strategies, values, resources and priorities of the University. The AVP serves as a visible University leader to elevate operations, analyze data and information, and recommend solutions to help achieve strategic vision and institutional goals.

Position Complexities:

UW-IT has an annual operating budget of $110 million, and leads a department of approximately 450 staff, students and consultants. The AVP must effectively build consensus among UW-IT leadership to support budgetary, personnel, and resource allocation goals and objectives.

UW-IT maintains a complex financial structure to support full cost transparency for its services and aligns with the strategic priorities of the organization. UW-IT’s source of revenue is from the state appropriation, tuition, grants, licensing, Technology Recharge Fee, and auxiliary activities. Internal accounting currently coexists with institutional financial systems to manage its resources. The implementation of Workday Financials in July 2023 will require significant change management but will result in a robust suite of tools to manage the business and support data analysis.

Position Dimensions and Impact to the University:

UW-IT provides critical IT infrastructure to the UW and collaborates with institutional partners to advance teaching and learning, innovation, and discovery at the University. The position collaborates closely with high-level leaders throughout the University, including the Office of Planning and Budgeting, the Executive Office for the President/Provost, the Vice President for UW Facilities, and the Vice President for UW Finance. The AVP participates actively in IT governance to help determine priorities of its services to the University.

REQUIREMENTS:
