Salary for Announcement

The salary range for this position is $41,200 -$51,500. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based upon a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, education, experience, specialty and training.

The above salary ranges represent the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the ranges of possible compensation at the time of posting. MSU Denver offers a full benefits package.

Position Summary

The specialist is a key player in the recruitment and outreach efforts of the School of Hospitality ( SOH ) and provides counseling to prospective students, applicants, and new admits interested in SOH programs to assist the School and the University in meeting enrollment goals.

The specialist contributes directly to the MSU Denver Mission to provide a high-quality, accessible, enriching education that prepares students for successful careers, post-graduate education and lifelong learning in a multicultural, global and technological society. Under the supervision of the Dean of the School of Hospitality, this position shares targeted recruitment and enrollment responsibilities, and will also engage with members of the Office of Enrollment Management, among others.

This position will involve intermittent travel, expected 20-30 local trips annually. The successful candidate will need a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

Duties/Responsibilities

40% – Recruitment & Outreach
  • Create and implement recruitment programs and strategies with local, regional, and state high schools, community colleges, and industry recruitment events through a lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Visits targeted and diverse high schools and community colleges to engage in recruitment efforts, including tabling at events, speaking to classes, connecting with teachers and faculty, etc.
  • Manages the prospective student population with advanced knowledge of hospitality program offerings, admissions requirements, and enrollment policies.
  • Conducts directed follow-up activities and communications for targeted prospective students, applicants, and newly admits interested in hospitality programs via email, mail, phone, text, and Customer Relations Management system.
  • Assists with execution of on-campus recruitment related events such as campus visits, group tours and bi-institutional events, and open houses. This can entail presenting to large audiences and providing general support for the events. These can be in person and virtual.
  • Helps develop communication plans for prospective students, applicants, and new admits interested in hospitality.
  • Responsible to track and maintain meaningful contact with prospective students, applicants, and new admits interested in hospitality programs, leading to matriculation.
  • Demonstrates sensitivity in working with personal/confidential records and information, adhering to FERPA and other related practices and policies.

40% – Counseling
  • Provides admissions counseling and academic planning advice to prospective students, applicants, and newly admitted students interested in hospitality programs via email, telephone, video conferencing, text, mail, etc. This position will also work with the SOH Academic Adviser and the Communication Specialist with these communications.
  • Facilitates application and admission of hospitality students by working closely with the Office of Admissions, Dual/Concurrent Enrollment in the Office of Innovative and Livelong Learning, as well as a variety of MSU Denver student services programs and academic offices.
  • Assists prospective hospitality students in registering for recruitment events and/or tours, submitting their application, completing their application, and moving through pre-enrollment and enrollment phases.
  • Proactively and collaboratively works to ensure prospective hospitality students have all the information about their application status and aids them in developing action steps to apply, earn admission, enroll and matriculate as smoothly as possible.
  • Learns about, promotes, and supports all hospitality degree programs and resources.
  • Maintains and delivers reports related to assigned enrollment functions.
  • Exercises professional judgment to interpret University policies to advise prospective and new students about admission procedures, transfer of credits, University policies, the financial aid processes, scholarships, program requirements, registration, tuition classification, and available student support services.

15% – Support to SOH
  • Help to identify process improvement areas, student support needs, and office development to ensure higher percentage of student matriculation.
  • Co-create informational resources, website development, student outreach, and any other resource needed for in support of recruitment, retention, and student success.
  • Manage the communications related to recruitment and outreach.
  • Engages in School of Hospitality team meetings, trainings, and events.
  • Serve on applicable committees in furtherance of shared governance.

5% – Additional Duties as Assigned
  • Upholds and interprets the standards of ethical practice in University admissions to assist with SOH recruitment activities.
  • Exhibits service and student-centeredness in performance of all job duties.
  • Demonstrates sensitivity toward colleagues, contacts, and students, their needs, issues, and concerns.
  • Promotes a team approach to the delivery of services and goal-attainment and a professional work environment.
  • Treats all others with respect; understands the impact of culture/background on the behavior of others; respects differences among the MSU Denver community and demonstrates inclusive behavior.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree
  • A minimum of 1-year experience working in higher education, secondary education, or student engagement organization (student employment may satisfy this requirement).
  • Experience providing high quality customer service through virtual interactions with clients, customers, or students.
  • Driver’s license and reliable transportation (travel expenses will be reimbursed pursuant to state guidelines).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with Enrollment Management, Admissions, Advising and/or Enrollment Services in a higher education setting, or post-graduate college counseling.
  • Experience working with a diverse, multicultural student population.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Experience using a Student Information System database or Customer Relationship Management system, or similar system.
Work Hours

Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. This position is 100% on campus.
