Established in 2004 as the fourth college in the Los Rios Community College District, Folsom Lake College ( FLC ) is a vibrant teaching and learning institution serving over 8,800 ethnically and racially diverse students each semester. The College and its two educational centers, the El Dorado Center in Placerville ( EDC ) and the Rancho Cordova Center ( RCC ), serve the rapidly growing areas of both eastern Sacramento and western El Dorado counties, forming a dynamic learning community committed to academic excellence, innovation, and educational equity.

The main Folsom campus provides educational environments designed to empower, inspire, and enrich our diverse student population, including students from historically underrepresented and underserved populations. Our College awards Associate in Arts or Science degrees, as well as Associate Degrees for Transfer, which guarantee transfer into California State Universities and numerous private and non-profit four-year colleges and universities. We also offer Career Education (CE) certificates and degrees and transfer credit for students who wish to continue their education at a four-year college or university.

Position Summary
The faculty member will work with a high risk student population that possibly have had no or minimal experience in higher education, including but not limited to: students with disabilities, current/former foster youth, and students eligible for EOPS, CARE, NextUp, and CalWORKs services. The faculty member shall be responsible for the following:
  • Counseling services
  • Provide leadership in areas of student intervention strategies, working with academically challenged students
  • Providing comprehensive support to students with disabilities, including Deaf/Hard of Hearing students within assigned counseling duties
  • Providing comprehensive support to DI students within EOPS, including students with disabilities, CalWORKs, and former/extended foster youth
  • Teaching assigned classes under the supervision of the area administrator
  • Helping students fulfill their maximum potential in mastering course content
  • Assessing student learning outcomes
  • Maintaining a thorough and up-to-date knowledge in their regular teaching field; continuing professional development
  • Assisting with articulation and curriculum development and review
  • Utilizing current technology in the performance of job duties
  • Maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position
  • Serving on college committees and participating in faculty governance including accreditation and student co-curricular activities
  • Assuming other responsibilities as assigned by the area dean
  • Fulfilling other duties and responsibilities of a full-time faculty member as outlined in the college faculty handbook
  • Participating in CFE student-focused activities such as:
    • new student workshops,
    • classroom presentations,
    • outreach activities, and
    • evening assignments
  • Providing referrals for students to other services and agencies.
The Center for Excellence maintains a focus on serving a wide array of educationally disadvantaged students and students with various types of disabilities.

DSPS provides:
  • Services to meet students’ educational goals such as degree or certificate, transfer, vocational, skills building, and/or professional development
  • Support to students and maintains an awareness and understanding of the functional limitations of students with disabilities and serving students within the context of related disability laws, and assistive technology
  • Case management service delivery
  • Knowledge of trends and challenges facing community college students with disabilities
  • Promotion of maximum independence and integration of individuals with disabilities
  • Counseling of academically and/or economically disadvantaged students;
  • Crisis intervention counseling
  • Universal design
  • Empathetic and active listening counseling
  • Counseling designed to support student retention and success
  • Support in career exploration
  • Support in developing study skills, time management and decision making tools/strategies
EOPS / CARE /NextUp/CalWORKs provides:
  • Services to meet students’ educational goals such as degree or certificate, transfer, vocational, skills building, and/or professional development
  • Support to students and maintains an awareness and understanding of the functional limitations of disportionately-impacted students and serving students within the context of meeting students “where they are;”
  • Knowledge of trends and challenges facing disportionately-impacted community college students
  • Promoting maximum independence and integration of individuals
  • Counseling of academically and/or economically disadvantaged students
  • Crisis intervention counseling
  • Universal design
  • Counseling designed to support student retention and success
  • Knowledge of guided pathways
Assignment Responsibilities
The counseling assignment may include, but is not limited to:
  • Assisting students and potential students in clarifying or establishing appropriate educational and vocational goals.
  • Maintaining current knowledge of counseling practices, methods, and techniques.
  • Maintaining current knowledge of EOPS regulations, guidelines, and student requirements.
  • Maintaining current knowledge of DSPS legal and program requirements related to student participants.
  • Participating in the planning and implementation of the counseling and advising program as directed.
  • Developing individual and group counseling processes to assist students in making decisions regarding their vocational goals and academic programs.
  • Aiding students in resolving personal and social problems that adversely affect their achievement.
  • Monitoring and counseling students regarding academic progress and probation status.
  • Preparing and maintaining a cumulative counseling record for each counselee. Analyzing periodically the achievement records of counselees; discussing with them their academic progress in terms of both short- and long-range educational and vocational goals.
  • Studying the needs, interests, abilities, achievements, and aptitudes of students; making recommendations to assist the college in fulfilling its obligation to students.
  • Relaying pertinent information to college personnel as needed and respecting the confidentiality of such records as required by law.
  • Conducting intake with students with disabilities who are applying for services to verify disability documentation and determine eligibility for services.
  • Developing an individualized education plans for each eligible student to authorize specific services and reasonable accommodations.
  • Recommending appropriate learning strategies and academic adjustments for students.
  • Developing and maintaining close working relationships off campus, with outreach centers, high schools, neighboring colleges and universities, and community resource agencies, and on campus, with instructional areas, special programs, and administration regarding student success, retention, and recruitment.
  • Personal counseling: Assisting students with life issues that interfere with academic success and assisting students with disability management, coping, and problem-solving techniques.
  • Maintaining an understanding of diverse and multi-cultural backgrounds and the appropriateness of counseling approaches.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

1. Have a master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling, OR Master’s degree in Counseling, Guidance Counseling, Student Personnel, Clinical or Counseling Psychology, Education Counseling, Social Work, Career Development, Marriage and Family Therapy, Marriage, or Family and Child Counseling; AND either fifteen or more semester units in upper division or graduate level coursework specifically related to people with disabilities, or completion of six semester units, or the equivalent of a graduate-level counseling practicum or counseling field work courses, in a post-secondary Disabled Students Programs and Services ( DSPS ) Program or in a program dealing predominantly or exclusively with people with disabilities, or two years of full-time experience, or the equivalent, in one or more of the following;(A) Counseling for students with disabilities; or (B) Counseling in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities of the position were predominantly or exclusively for persons with disabilities, or the equivalent.

AND

2a. Have completed a minimum of nine semester units of college course work predominantly relating to ethnic minorities or persons impacted by language, social, or economic disadvantages;

OR

2b. Have completed six semester units or the equivalent of a college-level counseling practicum or counseling fieldwork courses in a community college EOPS program, or in a program dealing predominantly with ethnic minorities or persons impacted by language, social, or economic disadvantages.

OR

2c. Have two years of occupational experience or the equivalent in work relating to ethnic minorities or persons impacted by language, social or economic disadvantages.

3. Have an equity-minded focus, responsiveness, and sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical or learning disabilities as it relates to differences in learning styles; and successfully foster and support an inclusive educational and employment environment.

Physical Demands Salary $51,723 to $90,660 annually. LRCCD Salary Schedules Additional Salary Information Initial annual salary within a given range varies, depending upon units/degrees completed at accredited colleges/universities and experience. Candidates not holding a master's degree may start at a salary lower than posted above.
