Job/Department Summary:

The Chief of Staff is the senior advisor to the President and a member of the President's Cabinet. The Chief of Staff leads key initiatives in support of the President's priorities, collaborates with the Vice Presidents and other senior leaders on a variety of activities crossing the University's organizational divisions, leads, directs, delegates, and assists with projects, and tracks to completion all presidential initiatives, manages the administrative affairs of the Office of the President, facilitates communication, interaction, and complaint resolution between the President, the President's Office, and various internal and external constituencies. This position handles sensitive and confidential issues on behalf of the President as well as emergent priority issues on a day‐to‐day basis.

Responsibilities of the Chief of Staff may span the organization and require constructive relationships with all University leadership, staff, faculty, and students. The Chief of Staff will be expected to successfully interact, negotiate and build strong and effective relationships, programs, and partnerships within the University. The incumbent performs a wide range of duties which require tact, sensitivity, independent judgment, diplomacy, organizational skills, flexibility, and discretion.

The Chief of Staff serves as key strategist with the President and other senior leadership in developing new strategic direction, plans, and initiatives. Broadly represents the President's interest across the organization. Responds to issues with little or no precedence that carry mission-critical significance.

Mandatory Vaccinations:

The CSU requires faculty, staff, and students who are accessing campus facilities to be fully immunized against COVID-19 or have received a medical or religious exemption. Selected candidates should be prepared to comply with this requirement.

Preferences:

Preference may be given to applicants with the following as they may be considered specialized skills:
  • A master's degree in business administration, higher education, public administration, communications, public relations, or a related field.
  • Experience in managing an administrative office in a public or nonprofit agency, college or university, or a comparable setting.
  • Experience managing/supervising staff.
  • Bilingual/multilingual.
    • Comprehensive knowledge and/or recent, relevant experience with:
      • Higher education administration working with the various divisions within a university.
      • Institutional/educational environments utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
      • Program and project management processes and practices.
      • Change management processes and practices.
      • Expertise in the use of spreadsheets including pivot tables, graphs, charts, macros and other formula driven features.
Required Education and Experience:

Advanced degree
AND
5 years of progressively responsible experience in areas of leadership, supervision, and/or program management. Experience will include 3 years in an academic setting.

Time Base: Full-time


Pay Plan: 12/12

Work Schedule: Mon-Fri 8:00am-5:00pm, Summer - Mon-Thurs 7:00-5:30.

Salary and Benefits Information:

Salary commensurate with background and experience of the individual selected. (Anticipated hiring range: $150,000 - $160,000 per year).

This position qualifies for benefits including tuition fee waiver (if eligible).

Additional Information:

California State University, Chico, in accordance with CSU policy, requires that the successful candidate complete a background check (including a criminal records check, sexual offender registry check, and/or fingerprinting) prior to assuming this position. Group/Category (President's Chief of Staff/ CAT 1 & 2).

The person holding this position is considered a “Limited Mandated Reporter” under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 (revised July 21, 2017) as a condition of employment.

A valid California Driver’s License must be maintained throughout employment in this position, as well as successful completion and continued compliance with CSU Defensive Driving Course.
