Web Services Librarian

The UTC Library seeks a non-tenure-track Assistant Professor of Practice who is a motivated, creative and user-focused professional to fill our Web Services Librarian position at the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga (UTC).

Library Description

In January 2015, UTC opened a new, five-story 180,000 square foot library. The library staff comprises 26 library faculty and 18.5 staff members, operates on an annual budget of just over 4 million dollars, and possesses collection holdings of more than 500,000 volumes, over 2,500 active journal subscriptions, 150 databases, and more than 28,000 accessible online journals. The library provides an information commons with 175+ public computers, 38 group study rooms, a media studio, three library instruction classrooms, a writing center, a cafe, and a 24-hour study space. The library delivers a comprehensive range of public services, including outreach, instruction, and research assistance, and is well equipped to support the research and scholarship needs of the UTC community.

Information Technology Team

UTC Library’s Information Technology Team consists of four librarians and two staff members working in an environment that stresses a progressive, collaborative and customer-focused approach to information services. The team supports approximately 350 desk or laptop computers and assorted peripherals, a variety of open-source online services, and numerous other library web and digital services. The team works closely with UTC’s Information Technology Division.

Examples of services and products the Information Technology Team supports include: Ex Libris Alma/Primo, ILLiad, EZproxy, Drupal, LibGuides, Booked, CONTENTdm, ArchivesSpace, Digital Commons, Windows/macOS imaging and deployment solutions, card swipe access, and security cameras.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Dean of the Library and supervised by the Director of Library IT, the Web Services Librarian builds, maintains, and enhances the front-end for library systems and technologies. This position holds responsibilities in the following:

Specific Position Responsibilities
  • Iteratively design, develop and maintain the library website within multiple content management systems;
  • Assess and improve patron experience via analytics and usability testing;
  • Create and maintain appropriate documentation; gather and evaluate relevant statistics;
  • Support library staff members in the development of digital content;
  • Improve cross-platform integration of online resources and services;
  • Maintain awareness and knowledge of contemporary design, coding and accessibility standards;
  • Participate in the acquisition, development, and support of digital tools, services, and applications that facilitate teaching, learning, and research.
Library Information Technology Responsibilities

Specific job duties within the Library Information Technology team vary based on position, but the following responsibilities encompass the broad functional activities of team members:
  • Develop and maintain library services and information technology services to the university community;
  • Provide consultation, support and problem resolution to ensure library software and hardware is functional, interoperable, and serves the ongoing goal of supporting research and teaching;
  • Partner with campus faculty, staff, and students as a technology leader, facilitator, trainer, designer, and developer of information technology initiatives and projects;
  • Identify, evaluate, and recommend technologies and resources for campus and library needs;
  • Serve as backup to other members of the library’s Information Technology Services Team.
Library and University Responsibilities

Specific job duties vary based on position, but the following responsibilities encompass the broad functional activities within the Library and University:
  • Serve as a member of the Library’s Faculty council;
  • Participate in providing reference or customer service at a Library service desk at least 1 hour per week;
  • Serve proactively on library-wide task forces, committees, and councils as appointed;
  • Participate in UTC governance, planning, and service;
  • Engage in continuing professional development.
Qualifications

The ideal candidate possesses the initiative, flexibility, and creativity to manage projects both independently and as part of a team in a dynamic work environment. The candidate should be able to handle complex, analytical and detailed work while maintaining a positive, change-oriented attitude. Effective writing and oral communication skills and strong interpersonal skills are a must. The candidate should exhibit a strong customer service focus, a passion for the profession, and a deep commitment to the academic community. Aptitude and desire for continued development of technology skill sets are integral to the success of this position. In addition to the aforementioned attributes, candidate assessment will rely on the strength of the following qualifications:

Required
  • Master's degree in MLIS or MSIS from an ALA-accredited program preferred; other relevant Master’s degrees considered. Graduate degree must be completed by May 2022.
  • 2+ years of professional experiences with common source-code editors (e.g. Sublime Text) and content management systems (e.g. Drupal 9);
  • 2+ years of professional experience with both HTML and CSS;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of practices, standards, and tools relating to the front-end testing of usability and accessibility elements, along with cross-browser and cross-device functionality.
Preferred
  • 1+ years of professional experience with scripting and template languages (e.g. PHP, Twig);
  • 1+ years of professional experience with team processes and tools for application development (e.g. Git, Agile);
  • 1+ years of professional experience with the LAMP stack;
  • Familiarity with a web application framework (e.g. Tailwind, Bootstrap, jQuery);
  • Familiarity with library technologies/frameworks (e.g. LibApps, OpenURL resolvers, web-scale discovery);
  • Familiarity with the OSS movement.
Compensation

The minimum salary is $50,000, commensurate with experience.

This is a full-time, 12-month, non-tenure-track position with faculty status and rank of Assistant Professor of Practice. The initial appointment for this position will be up to a maximum of three years, with the possibility of renewal.

Benefits include: 24 days of vacation and 12 days sick leave per year, 11 paid holidays, 80% of health/life insurance paid by the state, choice of retirement programs paid by the state and equivalent to ≈ 10% of an individual’s annual salary, partial relocation reimbursement, professional development funding, tax program savings, and more.
