Portland Community College’s Fire Protection Technology program is seeking a full-time instructor effective August 21, 2022 beginning the 2022/2023 academic year.

Portland Community College’s Fire Protection Technology program offers a unique opportunity to launch a career of public service in a short amount of time. PCC provides a diverse yet relevant variety of courses. We correlate classroom, laboratory, and field experience in public and private sector fire organizations. This faculty position based out of PCC’s Cascade campus requires experience in the Fire Protection industry and the ability to teach a broad range of Fire Protection courses as well as develop future coursework in alignment with industry. The position also requires the ability to facilitate development of technical skills and growth of interpersonal skills among a diverse student population through culturally-responsive instruction. As the only full-time Fire Protection (FP) instructor, this position performs all duties of full-time faculty at PCC and in particular:
  • provides academic leadership in the implementation of a robust fire protection education program;
  • supports and mentors FP part-time faculty;
  • supports the development of an innovative, culturally-responsive fire protection curriculum that meets the needs of a diverse student body and industry

This position serves FP programs that currently span multiple locations. The primary location will be at the Cascade campus, with an expectation that Faculty spend time at each location where FP courses operate.

In addition, there will be some occasions where business will be required at other PCC or off-site locations. There will be some opportunities for remote/hybrid work, as approved by the position supervisor and executive leaders.

Minimum Instructor Qualifications

To be considered, your application must demonstrate these minimum qualifications. (Experience is calculated based on the start and end dates you provide multiplied by the number of hours per week worked).
  • Associate’s Degree in Fire Protection Technology or related field from an accredited institution
  • Minimum 2 years full-time or 4 years part-time recent teaching experience (teaching experience can include leading training and teaching skill-based techniques)
  • 5 years recent experience as a career fire fighter OR 10 years recent experience as a volunteer fire fighter, or an equivalent combination
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior work with diverse audiences
  • Prior experience teaching at the community college, college and/or adult education level
Starting Salary Expectations Initial Salary Placement will be up to Step 3 ($62,665) based on related experience, per PCC's collective bargaining agreement. Position Grade Salary Range $58780 to $99564 Annual Salary FTE 1.0 PCC Benefits

PCC offers a comprehensive benefit package designed to provide employees and their families, including domestic partners, with access to a broad range of benefit options. PCC currently funds the Oregon Public Employees Retirement System (PERS/OPSRP) pension and contributes an additional 6% into the employee's Individual Account Program under PERS/OPSRP. A portion of the 6% will be diverted to The Employee Pension Stability Account as mandated by Senate Bill 1049. PCC offers a tax deferred annuity program and a deferred compensation program where employees may save additional pre-tax dollars for retirement.

Additionally, PCC provides a tuition waiver for courses offered at PCC for yourself, domestic partner, and dependent children under 24 years of age; plus partial tuition reimbursement for yourself at other accredited institutions.

* Please note: Temporary Full-Time Faculty are not eligible for Personal Leave Days, Life Insurance, Long-term Disability, or AD&D Insurance.

Paid Leave:
  • 1 day of sick leave for every 18 days worked (~10 per year)
  • 21 hours of additional personal leave per year
  • 4 paid holidays (which occur during the term you are teaching)

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Instructors shall have earned required academic credentials at a regionally accredited US institution or a foreign institution having the equivalent of regional accreditation.

Instructors with credentials from other countries will have their transcripts evaluated by agencies that have good standing with the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services to establish fulfillment of this standard.
