The Barnes Center at The Arch is Syracuse University’s integrated health and wellness center which incorporates counseling, health, health promotion and recreation. The Assistant Director is a core member of the Counseling leadership team and reports to the Counseling Director. The Assistant Director assists the Director in developing and implementing Counseling’s mission and vision and assists in the center’s day-to-day management. The Assistant Director provides mental health services including the provision of short-term individual therapy, group therapy, walk-in services, preventative outreach programming, and participation in the Center’s on-call rotation.

Administrative responsibilities include the provision of clinical and administrative supervision to staff therapists, assistance in the management of daily clinical operations, and serving as a liaison with our health and wellness offices. The Assistant Director serves on appropriate counseling, Barnes Center, and university committees.

The Assistant Director must demonstrate high levels of cultural competency, be well versed at working with students and staff from a variety of traditionally underrepresented backgrounds, and demonstrate an understanding of, and commitment to, social justice work. Qualifications
  • Master’s degree, or higher, in a mental health discipline (e.g., clinical or counseling psychology, social work, marriage and family therapy, or counselor education).
  • Minimum 5 years of post-degree experience, and minimum of three years experience providing supervision.
  • Must be licensed within the state of New York or eligible to transfer licensure from another state.
Job Specific Qualifications
  • Experience providing clinical services and supervision to culturally diverse client population and staff required.
  • Experience with crisis intervention and the ability to conduct risk assessments and manage potentially high risk clients required.
  • Experience providing group therapy required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Ability to provide clinical and administrative supervision as well as provide oversight and guidance for committees and work groups.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and creatively in developing outreach education programming.
  • Ability to support and motivate clinical and support staff.
  • Understanding of organizational systems and the ability to work collaboratively and creatively with individuals from a wide range of professional disciplines.
  • Strong leadership skills, particularly in regards to team development.
Responsibilities
  • Assist in the day-to-day management and administration of Barnes Center at The Arch Counseling, including assisting in the development of policies and procedures, step-care and integrated service Provision of direct clinical services including individual and group therapy, drop-in services, and crisis services.
  • Participate on relevant committees and/or teams that have the mission of promoting health and wellness in regards to mental health, substance abuse, and/or sexual assault and relationship violence.
  • Liaison to other health and wellness units. As well as relevant campus partners such as the Office of Student Living, Student Outreach and Retention, and the Office of Community Standards on a range of mental health topics.
  • Timely completion of appropriate clinical documentation, case management, coordination of support services and care with other offices throughout the university.
  • Participate in the Counseling Center’s on-call rotation.
