Introduction (Description of School/College/Dept/Program)
The Department of Ancient and Modern Languages, Literature, and Cultures at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) invites applications for a full-time, multi-year Japanese Language Instructor, to begin in August 2022. The Department is located on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, an urban research university with the twin missions of research and student access, including a large percentage of first-generation students. The Department is made up of nine programs, including Arabic, Chinese, Classics (Greek and Latin), German, Hebrew, Japanese, Korean, Polish, and Russian. The Department has a vibrant undergraduate program, with some opportunities for related graduate study. More information about the Japanese program can be found at https://uwm.edu/japanese/.

Job Summary
Duties for the Japanese position will include teaching first year Japanese language (first and second semesters). Teaching load will be 12 credit hours per semester.

Minimum Qualifications
A successful candidate will have:
  • An MA or higher in Japanese Studies, Second Language Acquisition, or related field by January 2022.
  • Demonstrated native or near- native FLUENCY in JAPANESE.
  • Demonstrated native or near- native FLUENCY in ENGLISH.
  • Experience and willingness to participate in and organize extra-curricular activities in support of department and programmatic goals.
  • Demonstrated teaching excellence.





Preferred Qualifications
Preferred qualifications:
  • Experience in teaching Japanese language at the university level.
  • Ability to teach both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Experience mentoring undergraduate students.
  • Experience using social media, and other strategies to grow the Japanese major at UWM.
