Assistant Director of New Student & Family Programs

Butler University seeks an energetic and highly visible professional to join the Student Affairs team as the Assistant Director of New Student & Family Programs. This position is a key member within the Department of Student Involvement & Leadership.

Butler University is nationally recognized by the Princeton Review for providing dynamic student involvement opportunities both on campus and throughout the city of Indianapolis. Within the 2021-2022 academic year, Butler participated in the Gardner Institute - Foundations of Excellence to assess our first-year experience. The outcomes of this collaborative process will have a significant impact on the future work of the Office of New Student and Family Programs. This Assistant Director will actively contribute to the Office of New Student and Family Programs by facilitating robust Orientation programming, on-going new student transition opportunities, and family engagement. They will advance BU|BeWell, Butler’s wellbeing model, with the creation, implementation and assessment of new student engagement opportunities across the eight dimensions of wellbeing. Finally, this Assistant Director will serve as a resource for new students and families and assist with successful transition to college life and the Butler University community.

Overall, the Assistant Director will actively contribute to a vibrant campus environment and collaborate with students, colleagues, and community partners to enhance holistic student development. This is a full-time, live-on position.


  1. Contribute to the University's “Butler Beyond” strategy and the Division of Student Affairs’ strategic plan by creating and then implementing engagement opportunities that focus on new student engagement and well-being

  2. Assist in the overall coordination of new student Orientation activities with direct oversight of specific elements of the programming. Orientation activities include the selection and training of student leaders; planning large-scale programs; support the coordination of pre-orientation programs; delivery of online, educational resources; and the promotion of Orientation and its components to various constituencies

  3. Coordinate January new student Orientation

  4. Collaborate with campus partners to develop and coordinate new student engagement opportunities throughout the year

  5. Assist in the coordination of family engagement through opportunities such as Orientation, Family Weekend, Family Council and virtual offerings throughout the year

  6. Contribute to a highly engaged Butler student experience and vibrant campus culture by living-on campus and supporting student life efforts. Expectations include participation in a shared Campus Activities on-call rotation (please note, this is not part of Residence Life on-call duty); collaboration with colleagues to support programs and initiatives that engage students in meaningful ways; being present for co-curricular programs; and supporting student trips, retreats and other departmental sponsored initiatives

  7. Collaboratively manage website, social media and other external facing resources

  8. Other duties as assigned


The successful candidate should be a collaborative, innovative professional with an ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with students, families, and colleagues. They should have passion for new student transition programs and desire a high level of engagement. A master’s degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education, or related field is required.

The successful candidate will possess the following professional qualifications and personal characteristics:
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion

  • Demonstrated commitment to the growth and development of students

  • Understanding of college student development theory and its application to new student orientation, transition, and retention

  • Experience in event planning processes and comprehensive understanding of best practices as related to programming including risk mitigation, and contract processes

  • Experience advising college students and groups

  • Command of technology including student learning platforms, social media and other online tools.
