PROFILE of the DEPARTMENT/COLLEGE

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas seeks a Chair and Executive Director to lead its growing and dynamic Department of Theatre and the Nevada Conservatory Theatre. The Chair serves as the administrative head of the Department, coordinating and supporting 12 full-time and 7 part-time faculty and enrolls over 220 undergraduate and 30 graduate students. The distinguished faculty includes nationally and internationally recognized scholars, artists and theatre practitioners with substantive links to the professional theatre and the film and television industry. Degrees offered include a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre with concentrations in Stage and Screen Acting, Design/Technology, and Theatre Studies; a Master of Fine Arts in Design/Technology, Performance, and Stage Management. The department has an established Acting for the Camera program that is integrated across the performance curriculum; and a successful interdisciplinary relationship with the Department of Film including film production, design, screen-acting and digital media. Situated in the “entertainment capital of the world” the department shares a dynamic relationship with the Las Vegas strip. Through collaboration, exchange, workshops, technical and performance projects, apprenticeships, internships and employment, the Las Vegas entertainment industry is a valuable resource enriching both faculty and students. The Nevada Conservatory Theatre (NCT), founded by the theatre faculty in 2000 and housed in the Judy Bayley Theatre on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas; stands as a model for the intersection of research, pedagogy and professional practice. The NCT is the applied artistic and technical producing arm of the department. Built on a professional-oriented, theatre model, the NCT is committed to bringing to Las Vegas the highest quality theatre. ROLE of the POSITION

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas Department of Theatre invites applications for a tenured Associate Professor or Professor of Theatre to serve as the Chair for the Department of Theatre and the Executive Director of the Nevada Conservatory Theatre to begin in Fall of 2022.

 

The Chair/Director is responsible for administering the day-to-day operation of the department and implementing its strategic priorities.  The Chair schedules and staffs all classes, supervises departmental employees, administers personnel evaluations, and recommends faculty for promotion and tenure as outlined in the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) Code. The Chair develops and manages departmental budgets, oversees facilities and equipment, and responds to concerns expressed by faculty, students, University officials and outside constituents. Concurrently, as the Executive Director of the NCT, the successful candidate will provide artistic and logistical leadership in theatre, production and company management, season selection, the hiring of professional guest artists, marketing, audience development, fundraising and community outreach in collaboration with faculty, college and university leaders. 

 

The Department of Theatre Chair/Executive Director for the Nevada Conservatory Theatre (NCT) is a full-time, tenured faculty position on a 12-month contract, ideally beginning July 1, 2022. The Department Chair/Executive Director is a complex position requiring a uniquely gifted candidate who can synthesize effective academic and artistic leadership. We seek candidates whose pursuit of educational and artistic excellence, innovative vision and creative energy will enable an elevated and effective engagement within a highly committed, vibrant, culturally diverse, intellectual-and-artistic amalgamated community of students, teachers, scholars, artists and technicians. The successful candidate will be an effective communicator, collaborator and consensus builder, with a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, shared governance and transparency. The ideal candidate will possess a progressive vision for the theatre of the 21st century, leading an emerging theatre program committed to exemplary professional-theatre practice in an educational setting. We seek a candidate who is academically grounded, faculty focused, student centered and professionally oriented.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires a Doctorate (DMA, DM, or PhD) or Terminal Degree (MM, MFA or equivalent) in a Theatre discipline from a regionally accredited college or university. Professional and/or academic accomplishments as a performer, scholar, or teacher commensurate with the rank of associate professor with tenure. These include:

  • A combination of a terminal academic degree (varies based on discipline) and significant professional experience
  • Past experience in a Department of Theatre setting such as Department Chair, Area Coordinator, or other

Credentials must be obtained prior to the start of employment.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Tenured Professor
  • A distinguished record of theatre administrative leadership in higher education

 

SALARY RANGE

Salary competitive with those at similarly situated institutions. Position is contingent upon funding.
