Title: Program Coordinator (Office of Intercultural Education)





Position Purpose:

Bates College seeks a student-centered professional to serve as Program Coordinator for the Kessler Scholars Program, a comprehensive, cohort-based support program designed to foster college access and success for first-generation, low- and moderate-income students. The Kessler Scholars Program is designed around evidence-based best practices for student success and combines academic, professional, and personal support to help first-generation students navigate Bates College with a sense of belonging and purpose across all years of their undergraduate experience. The Kessler Scholars Program is part of the national Kessler Scholars Collaborative, a diverse network of colleges and universities.

The Program Coordinator is an integral member of the Office of Intercultural Education (OIE), which is charged with creating a holistic, student-centered environment that cultivates community and belonging, provides resources for students’ personal and academic success, and connects students to opportunities for campus engagement. This hands-on position provides direct support for an increasingly diverse Bates College community utilizing excellent customer service skills. The Program Coordinator will be responsible for (1) coordinating and facilitating community-building and educational programming for first-generation and low-income students and (2) providing administrative and operational support to the OIE team. In this role, they will also collaborate with other OIE staff to manage OIE communications and marketing. Further, the Program Coordinator will be responsible for processing OIE expenses; monitoring, reconciling, and reporting on the OIE budget; managing OIE listservs; updating and managing the OIE website, and providing scheduling and program support to members of the OIE team.



Job Duties:

First-Generation Student Support, Program Design and Implementation (65%)
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Dean of First-Generation and Bobcat First Programs to design, implement, and assess programs Develop and promote cross-campus partnerships for programming and student support by establishing close relationships with key campus partners such as Student Affairs offices including Campus Life, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Purposeful Work, the Center for Global Education, and the Harward Center for Community Partnerships.
  • Provide administrative and logistic support for key Bobcat First programs including pre-orientation, peer mentorship, and parents and families.
  • Assist in coordinating special events such as the Bobcat First banquet and senior retreat.
  • Actively encourage and recruit students to Bobcat First and other campus events, activities, workshops and programs.
  • Support and collaborate with identity-based student organizations, with a particular focus on community-building programming, including staffing late-night and weekend events in support of building relationships with students.
  • Plan and facilitate educational/cultural workshops and trips.
  • Serve as an informal mentor and advisor for students who frequent the office.
  • Assist in compiling data and preparing reports of student support programs and activities.
  • Attend and participate in meetings, trainings, and professional development activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Dean of First-Generation and Bobcat First Programs.
Administration and Operations (35%)
  • Process office expenditures. Monitor, reconcile, and report on budget expenses.
  • Manage listservs and social media accounts.
  • Manage and update OIE websites.
  • Provide scheduling support to other staff members.
  • Be a visible presence in the office.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work, or relevant field required. Master’s degree preferred.

Experience

3-5 years of experience advising, developing and delivering academic support services for first-generation college students.
Demonstrated experience in project management and coordination.
Experience in the field of student affairs and student-facing diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Ability to work flexible hours, including weekend and evening hours.

Skills and Knowledge

Commitment to working with students of color, LGBTQ+ students, and first-generation students, their families, and campus support structures to facilitate their academic, co-curricular, and personal success and development.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and student privacy as appropriate.
Effective interpersonal, communication and organizational skills and the ability to coordinate resources and staff within the college community.
Solid understanding of the academic and social challenges experienced by marginalized students in a college environment.
Ability to work in a highly collaborative environment.
Proficiency in basic data management systems, computer applications, and social media platforms.
Demonstrated commitment to practices in equity, inclusion, access, and anti-racism and to serving the needs of a culturally and educationally diverse and inclusive community.
Fluency in Spanish a plus.
