Title: Associate Director of Counseling and Psychological Services





Position Purpose:

Bates Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is the primary center on campus providing direct clinical services such as individual therapy and group therapy, psychiatric evaluation, crisis intervention, psychological/disabilities assessment, psychoeducation, wellness workshops and short-term clinical services to the undergraduate population.

The Associate Director of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is responsible for providing individual and group counseling, intake assessment and triage, crisis intervention, clinical consultation, and outreach/training for students, as well as functioning as a liaison and mental health consultant to the Bates College community in coordination with the Director. The Associate Director will share daily administrative duties with the Director of CAPS, assist the Director in evaluating and optimizing trauma informed, gender affirming, and culturally sensitive clinical services. The Associate Director will also help manage and facilitate outreach and group consultation with college partners and off-campus community partners. The Associate Director will collaborate with the Director on strategic planning and implementation of identified CAPS goals and initiatives, including the development of a robust training program for clinical interns from a variety of disciplines.



Job Duties:

Clinical
  • Collaborate with the CAPS team in the provision of counseling and psychological services.
  • Maintain an active and balanced clinical caseload, providing individual and group counseling and psychotherapy to students.
  • Provide direct clinical assessment of students and refer students to higher levels of care as necessary and clinically appropriate.
  • Manage situations involving students in crisis and coordinate with other CAPS providers, campus partners and external providers, when clinically appropriate, to ensure continuity of care.
  • Attend and co-facilitate weekly CAPS staff meetings.
  • Actively partner and collaborate with the Associate Director of Student Health Support for coordination of care with Health Services and with external providers, when appropriate.
  • Provide consultation and guidance to faculty, staff, and parents.
  • In collaboration with the Director, develop effective and efficient policies and procedures in the event of student psychiatric hospitalizations to ensure continuity of care.
  • Utilize student/client centered, trauma informed, gender inclusive, and culturally sensitive practices focused on confidentiality, resiliency, empowerment and self-determinism.
  • Actively participate in clinical and administrative meetings with the Director of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS).
  • Serve as on-call staff for emergent situations in which the CAPS on-call system (Protocall) requires professional consultation. On-call counselors are also responsible for communicating pertinent information to the Dean on call and/or campus partners, when appropriate.
Administrative
  • Maintain clear, accurate and timely documentation in accordance with College data collection and legal reporting obligations/requirements.
  • Maintain clinical records in Titanium, the electronic clinical record system utilized by CAPS to track referrals of distressed students from administration, faculty, staff, and other members of the College community.
  • Conduct ongoing evaluation and optimization of clinical services, in collaboration with the Director.
  • Collaborate with the Director on strategic planning and implementation of CAPS goals and initiatives, with priority given to development of a robust training program.
  • Develop and maintain liaisons with community mental health resources.
  • Collaborate with key campus partners such as medical providers, health educators and Residence Life coordinators, and athletic trainers.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Student Support and Community Standards regarding individual students of concern and medical leaves of absence for students.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Accessible Education regarding student disabilities and the provision of reasonable accommodations.
  • Ensure departmental compliance with applicable state and federal laws and mandates as well as relevant departmental policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with the Director to recruit, train, and retain a diverse clinical staff to mirror the growing number of students from diverse backgrounds.
Educational
  • Collaborate with the Director to assess the needs of the student body.
  • In partnership with the Director, collaborate with the Office of Intercultural Education to co-create and co-facilitate culturally sensitive and trauma-informed programs and initiatives to support all students, particularly those from historically underrepresented and underserved populations, including students of color, LGBTQ students, international students, students with disabilities, and first-generation college students.
  • Serve as a resource for the college community and student groups on mental health and wellness advocacy issues, and support through psychoeducational program initiatives.
  • Provide consultation regarding mental health issues for a variety of constituents including students, parents, staff, and faculty.
  • Maintain professional licensure.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education

● Master’s or doctoral degree in Clinical or Counseling Psychology, Counselor Education, or Social Work from an accredited program.
● Valid clinical licensure in current state, with ability to obtain licensure in Maine within 90 days of employment.

Experience

● 5+ years of experience as a licensed clinician.
● 3+ years of experience in a college counseling center.

Skills and Knowledge

● Knowledge of contemporary professional practices in the delivery of trauma-informed, gender-affirming and culturally sensitive counseling and psychological services.
● Knowledge of ethical and legal issues related to college student mental health.
● Demonstrated interest and skills in data analysis and using technology to enhance delivery of services and programs.
● Demonstrated analytical skills to research and analyze data and information from a variety of sources to make sound recommendations and decisions.
● High level of personal and professional integrity, strong sense of ethics, and respect for privacy and confidentiality.
● Ability to set priorities to achieve objectives and to manage multiple, diverse assignments/projects.
● Demonstrated supervisory, administrative, and program management experience in a college setting.
● Demonstrated awareness of and commitment to ongoing training in cultural sensitivity through lens of diversity, equity and inclusion.
● Experience working with students from culturally diverse populations, as well as underrepresented and/or underserved populations.
● Ability to work well with a team of clinical professionals, as well as with campus and community partners.
● Ability to effectively manage during a crisis, with sensitivity.
● Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
● Strong leadership skills and ability to effectively lead group discussions.
● Ability to remain composed, approachable, and to demonstrate poise under stress.
● Strong presentation skills and ability to develop dynamic presentations.
● Strong interpersonal skills with ability to develop and maintain collegial relationships.
● Ability and willingness to work weekends, evenings and other non-traditional schedules.
