Job Description

An Upward Bound Program Resident Advisor (RA) is a junior or senior university student employed to provide direct supervision of high school students participating in the Upward Bound Summer Program. Resident Advisors have an important role in the development of the high school student participants’ positive attitude toward education. Positioned as a role model, Resident Advisors will influence the high school student’s perspective of what is involved in a successful university student career. RAs must communicate to our student participants the importance of establishing effective study habits and the necessity of developing an ability to socially interact with students and instructors from different social and cultural backgrounds. A Resident Advisor’s interaction with fellow Resident Advisors, the Resident Director, the Academic Coordinator and the Director will model how the Upward Bound high school participants should behave toward their fellow students. RAs must maintain the delicate balance of a high school student advocate and a high school student authority figure.

It is critical that all Resident Advisors enforce rules and regulations consistently. All RAs employed by the ERAU UB program will sign and abide in a Confidentiality Agreement.

RA’s will serve as the primary link between the students and professional staff. RA’s will receive support and guidance for their responsibilities from the Resident Director and the professional staff.

Each RA will be assigned approximately twelve high school students for which they will have direct responsibility. RA’s will conduct daily meetings, role call for activities, trip supervision, and room checks.

The Resident Advisor position is a summer contract assignment under the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University personnel policies. The position is considered temporary because of the ‘summer employment’ status. RAs are responsible for ‘around the clock’ supervision of our UB high school student participants. RAs may enroll in university classes with permission of the UB Director and/or Academic Coordinator. However, the Resident Director may not enroll in classes or hold another position for the duration of their contract.

Qualifications

Must be a rising sophomore, junior, senior, graduate student in college and in good standing at their university. RAs that have recently graduated from their university and are in transition from student to full time employment will also qualify.

Have (or had) a 3.0 GPA or above.

Residence hall or related experience is preferred.

Ability to work in a 24/7 environment for six weeks.

Some experience preferred working with low-income, first-generation or disadvantaged students.

Some experience preferred in tutoring, advising, or peer counseling.
