IT SYSTEM ENGINEER

Salary:

Minimum $60,000 ANNUAL (12 months)

Job Summary:

The Traffic Operations and Safety (TOPS) Laboratory, part of the UW-Madison, works closely with the Wisconsin DOT on improving safety and efficiency for Wisconsin travelers through the deployment of state-of-the-art traffic operations technology. This is a great opportunity for an aspiring IT system engineer to use their skills and grow their experience working with advanced traffic management software, complex networks, and connected traffic devices such as CCTV cameras, dynamic message, and roadway sensors. This position is a permanent assignment at the Traffic Management Center in Milwaukee - a 24/7 central communication center for the improvement of traffic safety and efficiency of the statewide freeway system.

Principal duties will include:

- Supporting ITS roadway and other connected devices, including new device integration
- Managing devices and polices in the WisDOT Advanced Traffic Management System along with troubleshooting any connectivity or data transmission issues
- Managing IT documentation and asset inventories
- Supporting CCTV traffic video feeds for partner agencies
- Coordinating with network and IT security teams
- Managing the computer network and supporting users in the TMC control room
- Supporting real-time and archived data flows between the TMC and the TOPS Lab
- Contributing to the overall research mission of the TOPS Lab

Education:

Required
Associate's Degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering, or a related field.

Qualifications:

Required:
- One or more years of professional experience in systems and hardware support
- Experience supporting enterprise networks
- Knowledge of IT asset management and process documentation
- Knowledge of IoT and other connected devices
- Knowledge of network and device security
- Knowledge of Windows server and Active Directory
- Work independently
- Demonstrated good communication skills

Preferred applicants will have experience in one or more of the following additional areas:
- Supporting computer systems and users in a secure environment, such as a police dispatch center
- Supporting real-time data flows between systems and devices across a complex, distributed network
- Managing ticketing systems and working with third parties to resolve hardware and software issues
- Configuring intelligent transportation systems (ITS) devices and policies
- Managing video surveillance systems and software
- Maintaining traffic signal systems and software
- Knowledge of API data exchange formats JSON and XML

Additional Information:

The position will be managed by the TOPS Lab IT Systems Manager at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. However, as an onsite position at the TMC, the System Engineer will work under the regular direction of the Traffic Systems and Management Section of the WisDOT Bureau of Traffic Operations.

This position is located in downtown Milwaukee at the WisDOT Traffic Management Center. Some after hours and weekend support may be required, along with occasional travel to WisDOT offices and partner agencies throughout the Milwaukee area and statewide. Travel expenses will be paid for by the project.

A fingerprint screening and background check will be required as a condition for employment.
