Job Summary

Reporting to the Vice President of Academic Affairs ( VPAA ). The Dean of Learning Commons is a leadership position requiring a highly motivated leader with the ability to deliver a high level of interactive customer service, as well as develop and maintain collaborative relationships inside and outside of the College. The successful candidate will have a record of prioritizing effectively, proactively solving problems, managing multiple projects simultaneously with high levels of accuracy, and achieving goals within or ahead of established time frames. The position serves the staff, faculty, and students of Tarrant County College by providing leadership in the implementation and ongoing activities associated with the Learning Commons, which is comprised of library services, supplemental instruction, maker-based, and discovery experiences, learning support, and other academic resources.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Oversees the day-to-day operations related to the Learning Commons and supervise the area managers, including the management of employee performance and conduct issues, annual performance evaluations, and conflict management
  • Interacts with students in the Learning Commons in ways that promote and enhance a growth mindset regarding student learning and model such behavior consistently for faculty and staff
  • Generates reports to meet institutional needs and grant requirements; prepare and manage annual budget for the Learning Commons; maintain accurate records regarding expenditure and equipment inventories; review operations on a periodic basis to optimize cost-effectiveness
  • Prepares and delivers presentations to communicate to the College community about the Learning Commons role and its capabilities
  • Strictly honor the privacy, security, and confidentiality of student records and other sensitive information according to appropriate state, federal and college regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Provide service excellence through courteous, informed, accessible, and professional engagement
  • Keeps informed on advancements and changes in the field of student learning, librarianship, and higher education academic support services
  • Creates a dynamic and innovative Learning Commons environment based upon current research and emerging or best practices
General Supervision and Management
  • Supervises, trains, and coaches the Learning Commons support staff, including conducting orientation; arrange training, development, and certification (as needed) for the faculty and staff contributing to the Learning Commons
  • Provides leadership for all aspects of the Learning Commons development and implementation, including engagement and collaborating with College leadership, faculty, staff, and students
  • Collaborates with Learning Commons Deans as well as other stakeholders to provide consistent and comprehensive services to support student success
  • Promotes the services provided by the Learning Commons, help institutionalize new practices, and enhance student success, as well as assure the operational success of the Learning Commons
  • Provides leadership for the assessment of the Learning Commons, including the data collection, monitoring, and evaluating progress, and recommending and implementing institutional practices to improve effectiveness on an ongoing basis
  • Communicates and coordinate with cross-functional and College-wide teams that include staff, faculty, students, and other stakeholders

Service Excellence
  • Serves on/participates in College committees, task forces, and teams as appropriate
  • Networks, collaborates, and actively participates in local, regional, national, or international organizations regarding learning commons development
  • Represents and promotes the College in local, state-wide, regional, national, or international organizations, as appropriate
  • Attends the workplace regularly, reports to work punctually, and follows a work schedule to keep up with the demands of the worksite
  • Completes all required training and professional development sessions sponsored through the Tarrant County College ( TCC ) Institute
  • Supports the values of the College: diversity, teaching excellence, student success, innovation and creativity, and service to the College
  • Supports the mission, values, and 3 goals and 8 principles of the College

*Performs other related tasks as required

SUPERVISION – Works under the general supervision of the Vice President of Academic Affairs.

Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution
  • Three (3) years of leadership/ administrative experience in a setting with integrated learning services, including technology, learning support, library services, instruction, and/or information resources
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Library Sciences and Information Sciences, Educational Technology, Instructional Technology, or Curriculum and Instruction
  • Five (5) years of supervision and management experience in an educational setting with responsibility for using various academic technologies or tools, to include evaluation, selection, implementation, and maintenance as it relates to processes, efficiencies, and assessment of the work in integrated learning support environments (Learning Commons)
  • Teaching experience in the community college/higher education setting
  • Experience in leveraging or curating technology resources to support students who utilize academic resources remotely or those enrolled in online courses
  • A track record of successful leadership in integrating access, equity, and student success practices in learning support environments
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to understand, interpret, and retain complex technical material, policies, procedures, contracts, proposals, charts, graphs, analyses, etc.
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise, grammatically correct reports, letters, and proposals about technical matters
  • Exhibit superior written, verbal, and interpersonal communications skills, excellent listening skills, as well as strong organizational skills
  • Proficient in relevant computer platforms/ technologies, including Microsoft Office suite of applications
  • Ability to supervise personnel and forge and sustain effective collegial work relationships that encourage change and innovation with a variety of individuals and groups in a complex and rapidly changing environment
  • Ability to analyze problems/complaints and facilitate resolution in a timely manner, coach, and mentor other team members
  • Ability to conduct classroom and one-on-one training; describe key accomplishments in cutting-edge learning commons environment
